Default BMW 1992 (E316) or CIVIC 2000 (VTI Oriel) ??

    Dear Guru(s), Help Required.

Im planning to buy a car i.e BMW (1992 E316) or Civic (2000 VTI Oriel). Im a bit confused which one to choose!!!

Im NOT concerned about the re-sale and the fuel consumption. My only concern is BMW’s parts availability and the cost. Can you please tell me about its parts availability and a rough comparison for the cost of major parts of both the cars?

Approximately how many times the BMW’s parts will be more expensive than Civic's?

    Thanks in advance.

one of my friend is having 1991 316 bimmer. he is importing the front wind shield (to replace the broken one) costing more than 100,000 rs., choice is yours..........

go for civic, bimmer parts are expensive and not easily available.

    @Konichiwa
dude if bmw parts are that easily available, than why every person is crazy about locally assembled cars? its 91 model and dewan ppl might be importing new car parts, not for down modelz.
i havent said any where its not a great car, it is but parts are key factor. model is down and not very common.
man always suggest wat u like (and maintain) for u.
    cheers

    @ hasan_t:

    Bro, its a bullsh*t, E-46's wind shield goes for like USD 500 $...! And imagine for a E-30 it should be around USD 200/300 $ + shipping/handling...!

    Your friend sounds like
    "over-clever"
    & kind of
    "*****"
to me...! He is just showing off his attitude, spinning around in a Bimmer :p ...!

    @hasan
bhai not every one wants to own a 15 to 20 year old car , people have diff perspectives, this car has to have atleast mileage of above 100k and if driven in pakistan it WILL be in ***** condition, rarely will u find a clean E-36, AND THATS THE REASON PEOPLE PREFER OTHER CARS OVER AND OLD BEEMER .
and yup ur friend is lying big time!, the windshield should me no more than 25k! TOPS! else ur friend is reely stupid or is a "chooru".

I think there is comparison b/w a BMW and Honda. BMWs have a special ride unmatched with even 07 civic. believe me. but the down side is that it may need abit of maintenance. if thats ok than go for BMW.

i will suggest you go for VTI oriel because the features VTI oriel have more than of BMW 1992, secondly there will be a problem for parts and importing them may even cost you more than the car price (at the moment), old cars have usually corroded bodies, this is an important thing which shuld always be looked, maintainence cose also matters.

There is absolutely no doubt you should go with a Civic. Seeing your budget, a 1992 BMW will become a pain to repair within a few months, if not already.

The people who are telling you to buy a bmw are the type of people who love getting rides in a bmw. They'll sit in your passenger seats and admire you, never realizing how expensive maintence is. People say the bmw is good, but dont understand how expensive they are to maintain in Pakistan.

Its a nice car if you want to leave it parked all day. But if you want to drive your car with certain peace of mind, stay away from the bmw. Your concern is operational costs, and the bmw is certainly MUCH more expensive than a Civic.

No offense, but in your budget, a bmw is not a sensible decision. You'll end up buying a 15 year old piece of junk just because it's a bmw.

PS Ateek, was the rudeness necessary? Have you any idea how much it costs to maintain a 15 year old bmw in pakistan? ChaterAli is selling his only because of the hassles of maintence. Even with a deep pocket, sourcing parts is a problem for him.

    @ anonpak:

Rudeness...? Never bro, atleast here...! 1st of all tell me something, are you really 77...?

So that means you agree, wind-shield of E-36 goes for
    "100,000 Rs"
    ...? That's stupid, not even for a E-60 this is the price for wind-shield :p ...!

Lemme give ya first hand advice as I got a BMW 316i E36.

BMW is a very very much fun to drive, driver oriented and most importantly it gotta feel. On the other hand Civic ain't got any of these characteristics, in short its not as fun as a Bimmer.

Maintenence of a Bimmer is as a matter of fact expensive in comparision to a Civic. Obviously same goes for the maintenence of any German and imported JDM car. Full fluids change and service/tune-up costs Rs. 10,000, which includes gear oil, engine oil, car wash, car polish, tune-up, code diagnosis, power steering fluids, oil filter, air filter and feul filter etc. Which will be in perfect condition for almost 20k kms or 6 months which ever comes first. Mechanical parts are expensive then a civic as used parts are not readily available and some rare parts needs to be outsourced. But mechanical parts of a bimmer will last atleast thrice the period of civic and they literally never breaks down.

Features of an E36, 316i are more then that of a 2000 Civic.

Badge Respect is far more then a brand new Civic.

Civic got a very good resale in comparision to a BMW.

In my personal opinion if you want to drive for pleasure and badge auro then go far a bimmer but if you want to go for a safe bet but a boring one then go for a Civic.

@ hasan_t, Your friend probably miscommunicated you as a BMW E36 windshield is available at Rs. 65,000 at Dewan and at Rs. 30k at Al-Mubarak Autos whereas a Non-OEM from Al-Mubarak will cost around 18k.

Engine M40-B16/I4 which comes in 316i costs around Rs. 150k c&f Karachi.

    Transmission costs around 65-80k.

Brake pads (Non-OEM) are for Rs. 8500.

Suspension costs (Non-OEM) Rs. 35k (Front/Rear Shocks, Springs, etc)

Non-OEM Parts are at par in quality and at times better then OEM but always go for a German Manufacturer. Non-OEM Parts are almost 1/3 price of an OEM.

Bro , everything has been explained to you in detail by most and especially by Charterali who owns one.
Some comments are nothing if not funny. No disrespect to any but to actually compare a BMW with a civic is hilarious. A 15 year old german car will trump any Pakistani assembled car especially if the choice is between a 15 year old German car and a 7 year old Pakistani assembled car.
That said maintance will be expensive compared to a civic. You should take that into account, if you can afford that then you shouldnt even be asking which to go for.
Come back, Luca Badoer, all is forgiven.

    Dear All,
Thank you so much for sharing your views. Trust me PakWheel/PakWheelerz are such a blessing for all of us. What a platform of true & unselfish help.

I am very much clear about the issue now. One thing is confirmed that the bimmer parts are available but its an expensive game. So now its upto my pocket.

once again thanks. esp. bro Charterali for your self experience sharing.
    God bless you all.

@hotadeel, A good 97 E36 318i should be in between 7.5-9 depending upon options and condition. A lemon will be for anything above 6.
