Havn't heard of any such inherent faults in the Civic. Is it a constant sound, like a belt squealing, grinding noise or a an intermittent "hiss" or "wheeze"?
If you could define more specifically when, where and WHAT kind of noise it is. maybe i'd be of some help.

    hi brother,
try to relate the sound with hot weather, if its a whoooooop like sound sort of strats like a whistle occurring in severe hot weather only then its normal, its probably due to the fact that once the ac switches on after tripping ithe gas starts to sirculate again and makes the sound. otherwise may ALlah help you because i tried to firgure out a similar sound in my Diesel corolla but was never successful.

Its the aircon's pressure relief valve. Loose some refrigerant and it should be okay.

yaar its i think more of a grinding sound..but its certainly not a hissing sound..wats the pressure relief valve ? and what exactly do i have to get done with that ? it could be like already mentioed below a gas noise..on the other hand i was thinking id rather lissen to this noise than gettin my car in even worse condition with the "HIGH" chances of honda mecanics making new mistakes.....

I had a problem with my XE as well. It gave a sound when the AC was turned on.
The idiot mechanics took out the bearing and replaced it.still the sound came. Then another idiot changed the belt, still the sound came. And in the end, another mechanic adjusted the belt differently,(tightened it a bit) and the noise ended!
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

Hmmm...... gringind sound. Is it possible that the A/C fan in the engine compartment behind the condenser is rubbing against something? That sorta thing usually happens in domestic window type A/Cs.
