Default Unstable Idle RPMs in Corolla 2010

    AoA

Friend of mine has Corolla xli 2010. Few days back car's idle RPM started to variate between 800 and 200 repeatedly. This was on CNG and without AC. With AC RPM stabilized a bit. He sent the car to the guy who installed the CNG to resolve the issue.

    Today, he came to my home on his car with following issues;
    ON CNG
    1. starting was pathetic
    2. if on CNG , it starts and stalls immediately.
    3. if some how it starts the RPM goes way up to 4000 and then gradually falls to zero and engine stops.
    4. I tried to adjust it now idle is 2000 but if i set it to less than 2000. RPM start decreasing and engine stalls in few seconds.
    5. Engine tends to shutdown whenever i remove me foot from the accelerator
    6. Check engine light is ON.

    On Petrol
    1. Starting is good.
    2. Idle RPMs variate between 2000 to 4500 and continues to do so.
    3. Accelerator response is v bad. even on leaving the accelerator the rpm keeps on increasing.
    3. Check engine light is on

    Please guide me about
    1. what might have gone wrong?
    2. What should I do?
    3. where should I take the car for solution?
    4. how serious is the problem?

Taking the car back to the same silly technician will be idiocy. Do the clever thing and take it to the Toyota Technicians.

It doesn't matter how good or bad they are, they are 'responsible' people. That's what matters. They won't give the car back unless its working.

They may charge you a bit, but nothing is better than the peace of mind.

Another very good alternate is to learn "hypermiling" (getting unbelievable mileages on Petrol) and remove CNG.

I had about 10% plans of putting CNG in my car in some far unforeseen future (mustakbil ba'eed shakiya) but now it has dropped to 1.5% after reading your tragic story.

    1. good to know that u removed the air intake blockage. i forgot to add that after this you'll have to reset ur ecu by removing battery terminal (any one of them, completely off the battery to break the circuit). keep it off for around 5 mins to be safe. and put it back on securely. then start on petrol and test it.

    2. you really have to get tappets and plug gaps back to original so do ask 3s dealers to bring those back to originals.

    3. the advancer usually has a light on it to signal that its working. depending on the brand and model, if its switched on/ blinking (or whatever it does while on cng), if its behaviour is same on cng and petrol then its not working properly since its working (advancing spark timing) both on petrol as well as cng. if thats the case, get that sorted.

    do tell what happens nxt....

    Thanks every one for the valuable comments. follwoing is the update ;

Yesterday, Me and my friend went to Toyota Garden (Kalma Chowk) with an understanding that we will ask them to bring the car in its original position coz we dont need cng anymore.

When we got there and told them to do the above, we were surprised when the technician told us that toyota garden and many other 3s dealers have started installing CNG and if you wish to keep your cng we can tune it too.

My friend got tempted and agreed to keep the CNG (again) . Toyota guys started the diagnosis and after about 2 hours gave us the following report.

    1. Our previous CNG guy had tempered with the throttle bodies preset switch in order to increase the RPM on CNG and toyota in pakistan has no way of setting it again as it comes preset from Japan.

Solution: replace the complete throttle body (cost : 30,000 +)

    2. Engine Head valves got sticky or tight due to CNG. According to toyota this is very common in new corollas having 40,000km+ mileage on CNG.

Solution: complete engine head overhaul (COsT: 70,000 approx)

Total Estimated Cost : Rs: 105,000/-

I was there listening to them, according to me, they were right about the tempered throttle body, the setting screw was sealed with a drop of glue which that moron intentionally messed up by removing the glue and altered it.

I am not sure about the head valve theory, they must be bluffing. it may be sorted by adjusting the valve tappets. I hope.

Note: toyota is saying valve get stuck after 40,000 on CNG and they are now them selves installing it. COZ they know people will not stop using CNG so why not earn from it and subsequently more from repairs

Please guide me to a good place for the above mentioned issue as my friend cant afford it on his own and cant ask from his dad as the car is just 8 months old. Rs. 105,000 is unjustifiable.

    thank you.

man if the cars milleage is above 50000 kms then it is the problem of debit settings in other language valves are struck.in suzuki these can be adjusted manually but in new or imported cars like vitz like i have it is tob adjusted by mechanical worker ( khradia). by lifting thr head.i had the same problem with my vitz. the cng work shops tried alot but at last iwent to jahangir garage in faisalabad who fixed it.it took almost two days and costed around 17000 as iwent for new valves.if u go for 2nd hand it midht cost u 6-8 thousands.but relax problem is not so severe at all.it is a regular problem in toyota alot of my friends had the same problem but it doesnt effect the engine.only the engine stops whe idle.so dont worry.

    Update:

Went to Auto super market Chaburji (Pak Autos) they specialize in auto electronics.
According to them check engine light is due to engine head valves and unstable RPM is coz of the messed up throttle body. they had a device called a scanner (a hand held computer with a data cable) with the help of which they diagnose and adjust various settings. they gave us an appointment for today and assured that the RPM issue will be resolved.

Regarding the check engine light and valve problem, he blamed CNG for this. He discouraged use of CNG in cars with VVTi or i-vtec engines.

He will charge 1200 for RPM setting through scanner.

Better to suggest your frnd to take out CNG and drive it on Petrol by this way u can feel some power as already its underpowered car, no ques waiting, no tension in winter for low pressure, no tension of load shedding of CNG and you can have prolonged refuel stops.

    @Porche_Maker

If I could afford to buy a brand new Corolla 2010 , i would have kept it on petrol and in original condition as long as possible. I know the CNG was a mistake in these VVTi cars and now my friend has realized it too (the hard way). If the car gets ok on petrol we will definitely keep it on petrol. This will help in preventing the engine from further damage.

Corolla's average on Petrol is not nice (its underpowered and eats more fuel). It won't be easy to run it on Petrol..

may be but its mileage is better than the 2002-2007 corolla. in our office we have both, the mileage with ac and with in city is

    Corolla (2006): 8.5km/Litre (max)
    Corolla (2009): 13.8km/Litre (max)

new corolla sucks on cng. people at my office did not have problems as you stated but they are getting pathetic cng averages

when they fix the rpm problem, get ur emulator/advancer checked. it seems to be fake.very common problem.

i have once tune the engine from a local mechanic and he plugged the wire of something else to the throttle body and the throttle body wire to something else, so the car behaves exactly like yours, then an expert mech. set the messing wires.

hey, make sure that they dont reflash the ecu to 'set' the rpm proper, that would be a huge mistake! It'll surely ruin the originality of ur car as it will only MASK the problem rather than fix it. U need to get to the root of the problem. If they say its a valve issue then surely its the valve clearance thats been adjusted wrong. Get it fixed by toyota 3s ppl.

But the problem is with the Advancers....
If unable to solve it...Try bringing to original state and see if it performs fine or not..
If performs fine, than CNG Advancers/Emultor are responsible..
i totally agree with you mate, had a 1.6 SE Saloon which had the same problem and same reason. the problem was with its advancer and also the person that installed the kit effed up the wiring too. had to go to toyota and get the IT done to reset the CPU.
Drive carefully! Remember, it's not only a car that can be recalled by it's maker.
