    Default 2010 GLI Problem

I have a corolla gli with 6000 km mileage. My questions are related to the RPMs of the car.I have the following queries:-

    1) At idol position rpms vary between 600 to 900 rpms. This behaviour is same with or without AC.I have heard that at idol RPMS should stay at 800.Is this behaviour normal?
    2) While downshifting gears i-e from 3rd to second or second to first the rpms drop to 600, and occasionally to 400.Is this normal?
    3) Should the rpms drop below 600 while having second gear at low speeds?

I have checked about my situation with toyota people at rawalpindi and they wernt able to give a satisfactory answer. In a nutshell they say it is pretty normal.

    Thank You

    Sir

your idle RPM will be mentioned in your car manual, both with and without A/C.

Follow that, 400 seems too low, it should remain constant on idle.

    @959:
    Sir
No RPM related information is mentioned in the car manual.
Somebody suggested that the throttle body may need servicing, which i checked with toyota people but it was clean.

At idle, RPM should stay stable, though it may increase a bit with AC turned on but still it should be stable (around 800).

It all depends on the RPM of your engine,
Say if you were at 80km/h and you downshifted to 2nd from 3rd then RPM might show 6k but if you do the same with speed at 60kmh then the RPM may show 4k (If RPM meter is working properly).

    3) Should the rpms drop below 600 while having second gear at low speeds?
Yes not only in second gear, but in every gear.
Each gear has its upper limits and lower limits,
If you drive the car at lower limit of any gear the RPM will drop and if you further drop below the lower limits of any gear than the car will stop.
One of the most difficult things in the world is to know how to do something, and to watch without comment, somebody else do it incorrectly.

the iddle should remain @ 800,with AC or even head lights switched on
any explanation they are giving is crap.

i hope its just a minor TPS adjustment

its either TPS or something to do with engine mechanics that causes the rpm to drop initially and then the ecu compensates for the mechanical problem by increasing rpm by givin it a bit more throttle.

Did you get anything done to the car lately? like any sorta service? tune up etc? If so thn do tell which stuff was tweaked.

Im thinkin its valve clearance/ ignition system etc....

and i think the toyota people are just trying to avoid warranty claim issue. because unstable/ floating idling is NOT normal!!

You should properly claim warranty from toyota dealers, go to isb ppl if rwp ppl wont listen to you. If your car is still in warranty tht is....

and if they still wont listen to you then just go to consumer court and all you need to do is lodge an application. Thats it. Believe me, they're just trying to avoid warranty claim! Crooks!

You need to get the IAC checked out.

(The Idle Air Circuit has a small motor controlled by the ECU that varies in real time a small orifice on the intake side. This is spearate from the TPS.)

RPMs (in my case) depends alot on the temperature of the engine. My experience is with Honda City though, when I stop at Pesahwar or Rawalpindi toll plaza, sometimes my RPM is somewhere between 400 - 600 (because the distance traveled perhaps warms the engine up).

I haven't driven GLi on the highway, I drive it only locally, but I haven't seen its RPM going below 800 ever. This is most probably because I don't make trips bigger than 3 - 5 kilometers in it and the engine is almost all the time cold.

I do believe RPMs vary a lot based on the temperature of the engine.

But hey, as long as the car doesn't turn off (with or without AC), I believe everything is normal. Even if it remains on 200 revs. I mean does it really matter?!

    Thanks guys for the suggestions
I am not very technical regarding cars.Is TPS related to throttle system of the car?
I noticed another thing today,at idle when i turned on full beam rpms drop suddenly to 500-600 rpms.

    Salam.
Dear brothers I have spent last 3 months in experimenting on this issue. I have a corolla gli 2011 driven 33000 kms only on petrol and no cng from scratch. This happened to me a few months back that the rpm of my car started behaving abnormally. When the car was idle, rpm fluctuates between 1000 to 400, with all accessories and a/c off. I have been nearly to all toyota dealerships and they did everything to rectify the fault but in vain. But a few days back I found a cure to this epidemic which had been eating my brain out. Trust me I know how it feels like to sit in a 1.5 mil car and get stupid jerks on idle, and dont even ask what circus car did when I turned on a/c or headlamps or hid or car stereo. I was nearly going to sell my beauty till I found the cure and now my car is like just out of showroom. Here is what I did :
    1) Make sure ignition is off and key is out of switch
    2) Disconnect negative terminal of battery and let it touch the plastic part of battery for 2 hours
    3) Make sure not even a fly touches that negative terminal
    4) Then reconnect the terminal in one go back to battery
    5) Put the key in ignition switch and move it two times so engine check light comes but PLS dont start car
    6) Keep holding it for 2 mins and then take out the key.
    7) Now put the key back in and start car
    8) Dont pedal on accelerator and let the car idle for 15 mins and then turn it off without pressing accelerator
    9) Now say Allah-o-Akbar and start the car and drive it hard for 100 kms making sure that no matter whatever happens you shouldnt loose rpm below 1000
    10) Do this without turning on any accessories like a/c or stereo or headlamps or any other thing u have that sucks current from battery
    11) Now your car will be like brand new and the computer in your car will learn sports settings of rpm and it will never fall abnormally.

Before doing all this I did everything like throttle body cleaning, replacing plugs, replacing plug coils, changing battery to 65amp, changing oil, pouring hi-octane, and bla bla bla... But nothing worked and then one night miracle happened when I did all that I have mentioned above in points. I have one word for Toyota dealerships *f. Off*
