Default GLi Meter Guages Acting WIerd

Just bought a zero-mile GLi. The problem is when I insert the key, switch on, everything is fine like the check lights turn on/off but here are a few things I just noticed:

    1. The gauge needles get a jerk of some kind and then are brought back to the Zero-Line. Same goes for the temperature and fuel gauges.

    2. After cranking up the engine everything goes fine, BUT, when I switch off the engine all gauges needles remain stuck where they were in the engine start position, like the RPM is at 800 or something. Its only the Speedometer gauge needle that goes to Zero-line.

Now honestly, I just noticed this after driving the car for around 60KMs before that, it was either not there or I just simply missed it. BUT, I got something to confess which may or may not have anything to do with this.
I installed a security system and LED lights in place of the parking lights. It was immediately followed by some fuse blown up and the guy doing this job started fingering the fuse boxes (both in the cabin and engine).

Its Saturday night and I'm tense and worried. Some friends say, it could be due to some kind of tampering with the odometer like reversing/stopping which causes this issue. Some suggest its a random fault.

Your comments are very much needed at this time. Sorry for the long post but I needed to explain everything for you guys to give your verdicts. Thanking in anticipation.

Check fuse in the fuse box located in the engine. I had an XLi. Its systems didn't act that way. All needles would come to zero or shut off, as soon as I would kill the engine.

It could be a possibility that the guy who installed the security system messed up something.

I installed a security system and LED lights in place of the parking lights.
Which leds you got and where?
The parking lights at the front are in the sealed beam.

I can only suggest one thing and this is what I would do IF i am in your situation:

1- Go back to your guy (the electrician) and ask him to take off everything he has installed and ask him to make sure he dont leave any sign of these modifications!

2- Go back to your nearest Toyota dealership and ask them to have a look if the problem still persist after removing all the mods.

These local ill-trained so called 'electrician' just work on 'hit and trial' methods...without any sense / knowledge whatsoever!

I hope your fault to go soon...its very very upsetting seeing anything going wrong with a brand new car! Good Luck.

    ^ Agreed.
The best is to get your car checked by a 3S dealer.

the gauges have lost a ground - IMO or the ground is being shared by something else thats causing the logic circuit to go crazy, nearly all except the fuel gauge is controlled by ECU being speed, rpm, temp, oil light, ignition light - the fuel gauge shares a logic circuit in the fuse box.

If it were a Honda - your multiplexer was to blame - as Ive seen dozens get fried by these so called electricians - probing it with a 12V test lamp, jeez (the smoke that makes all things work in electronics leaves) and its very difficult to locate the genuine smoke again something like

OK guys. Almost all of you were correct. Heres what I did

-- Got hold of the electrician
-- Smoked his *** and ****** him hard
-- Found out that when the fuse was initially blown, he instead of installing a new one, replaced it with another one from around the installed ones, leaving the slot blank.
-- Installed a new one and now its working fine.
