Default My 93' Corolla From New Zealand (AE100 JDM)

    Hey guys,

This is my 1993 Toyota Corolla SE Limited. It's a Japanese import and has all of the features you would expect out of Japan, except it's now a little different from a bog standard grocery getter

It was completely standard when I bought it, but I've done a number of mods to it over the last 5-years of ownership so far, including a 4A-GE 20v Blacktop swap at the end of 2012. I've almost reached my goal of finding every single optional extra that was available from new, including some of the rarest items, such as the AirFantasy fragrance control system.

This first post will remain updated with all of the current modifications and photos. To view updates in chronological order please scroll through the various posts below this one.

    Thanks man!!

Here's my latest mod - FGK 4-2-1 stainless steel extractors. Designed and built in Japan by Fujitsubo Giken Kogyo and are one of the best sets of extractors you can buy for the 4A-GE. Had them fitted today and I'm already noticing a power increase. It replaces the very restrictive factory squished pipe that goes over the front subframe, so there's no more flat spot in the rev range when accelerating at full throttle. The needle seems to sky rocket even faster to redline and doesn't feel so sluggish down low.

Also fitted an OEM 24mm front swaybar, although haven't had a chance to test out the new handling characteristics yet as I had the old factory extractors etc in the trunk on the way home so I didn't want everything sliding around and causing damage.

My latest mod that I decided to install today - 266mm rear disc brakes! I converted from the old drum brakes to these nice shiny discs from a JDM AE101 Levin GT Apex (same discs/calipers used on the JDM AE101 Corolla GT sedan, FX-GT hatchback and BZ Touring wagon models). The discs and pads are brand new so I had a bit of fun earlier bedding them in earlier . Took me half the day to install them as I had to run the new handbrake cables and painstakingly remove the long bolt that goes through the lateral arms but I got there in the end. Here's some photos of the finished job:

Very nice. I also did the same mod last week on my car. But your stuff looks brand new
Btw did you also change the Proportioning valve? Disc brake requires more brake fluid than drum.

Thanks! Yeah my pads and discs are brand new, and the calipers have been cleaned up . Yep, I also got the proportioning valve. I haven't installed it yet though but will be doing so within the next few days. It'll give me the chance to bleed the system properly

Great work Scott. Share more details about the valve though. I am unable to find one of same corolla for disc so I might use Honda Civic's valve 4 Disc Brake.

BTW Hows handbrake performing? Same as Drum?

Thanks man. The proportioning valve is from an AE101 Levin GT Apex, which is the same valve that the AE101 Levin GT-Z uses as the rear disc size between the 4A-GE and 4A-GZE is the same. I personally wouldn't use one from a Honda as the brake bias is likely to be different. The AE101 valves are easy to get here so if you like I could send one over to you if you don't have any luck finding one

The handbrake holds nice and firm but I have tried pulling the handbrake up while driving as I don't want to stretch the cables. I never pulled it up while driving with the drum brakes either so I have nothing to compare it to sorry.

Cheers! I personally don't like the GT spoiler. They're quite easy to find here but I much prefer my duckbill type lip spoiler

Thanks. Can you share some pic of the valve .. Does it have some part no? I can look for that in our junk yards.
Sending from NZ will cost more than the disc's i bought :p

I have to ask this one since you posted that DIY, felt lazy at times and got busy at others

What is that stuff you used to sound deaden the doors? Apart from the brand etc, what is the actual material? Aluminum type thingy? It turned out pretty awesome after all though, sound went form "punk punk" to "tuk tuk"

I don't have a photo of the valve sorry, but it'll look identical to the one you already have fitted, except with different springs inside to control the brake bias. The part number for the non-ABS proportioning valve is 47150-16050. The valve itself is actually very small so it wouldn't cost much to ship. The hard part is removing it as it's quite far down in the engine bay and has numerous brake lines attached to it.

What is that stuff you used to sound deaden the doors? Apart from the brand etc, what is the actual material? Aluminum type thingy? It turned out pretty awesome after all though, sound went form "punk punk" to "tuk tuk"
Haha, no worries. The sound deadening I used is butyl based with aluminium backing. The cabin won't have a 'hot roof smell' during the summer months like the cheaper bitumen based material on the market. Each sheet I used was 1.9mm thick and 0.9kg in weight. Yeah it definitely changed the sound of the door. Even opening the door feels/sounds so much better . The biggest noticeable difference was the increase in sound quality however
