Default What makes "Corolla 86" so special??

Dear Friends! I'm amazed to listen such type of remarks from mechanics/drivers etc " 86 Corolla ki kia baat hai"" " 86 Corolla k baad koi car us jesi nai ayee"" " car tu bus 86 corolla he hai"" and so on. I'm confused what special has in that car?? old model, old shape, poor CNG performance, poor brakes in current scenario etc etc.

I own 1986 AE82 Hatchback imported from London and refurbished. Its amazing car indeed. The body is rust proof as it was made for European weather.
It never happens when anybody sit first time in my car and never ask about it. The Engine is really powerful. Road Grip is excellent and wonderful.
This car always gives me a pleasure drive.
And top of all, if anybody owns this car he would never like to sell it. Same is the case with me.

If you compare the CNG performance with latest Corollas then it would be poor but if you match the CNG performance with the counterparts like CIVIC, Charmant, etc it is really much better. My car gives me 14-15 Kms per Kg of gas on average in Karachi heavy traffic.
The AC is outstanding even if I compare it with the latest Corollas.

Because it was JAPANESE. The Pakistani versions lack quality control and several latest features including basic safety features.

Its majorly because we Pakistanis will always follow what our local mechanics say.
    e.g. Thermostat nikal do
    engine ko aahista rawan karo
    falaana, etc etc.

same with corolla 1986 - they got used to fixing it - as this model was flooded in Pakistan, and it was a quick buck for them everytime. NOW I would suggest everyone to go ask these same mechanics that did they have the factory vacuum routing diagram of the 2ELU engine it had - or how to adjust the SU carburettor. NOPE..

speaking of simplicity - this car was not very sturdily built compared to what the market had to offer, It was just the placebo effect that everyone buying a corolla was buying the best car made on earth. And also due to the scrapyard being always loaded with its parts. I sometimes wonder if its our local scrap dealers that make or destroy a cars reputation.

Compared to that cars era the Mazda lineup was extremely good - but not so popular as first it was quirkily solid built, second the scrappies did not have much of mazda parts lying around

you obviously have not driven a lot of cars. The Fiat Uno, Mazda 323 and Subaru GL sedan drives better than an old 1986 corolla

I think 86 is and was one great car!Given the chance id pick a 0meter 86 model over a cruisetronic everyday...question is whats so good about it?

Well firstly, the car has excellent grip, braking and a great ride. Body is very solid and i am amazed to know that it has bad cng avg, mine has great pick and avg, ac is great 2din player option and what not. Its one car which stick on the roads and runs fast. The 86 corolla is a great machine, simple design, engine and a very robust machine!

New shape[e has poor suspension and grip compared to it!
    +1

and i have also 86 corolla use as daily routine car .
it have charm so thats why people said 86 corolla 86 corolla hai .

Nothing but our usual market/mechanic tendency.

    86 Corolla bahut alaa hai.

95 Civic daaalphin is the best civic for madeeefaeeeing.

    Etc.

No wonder we still get a 1986 Alto brand new as a 2010 car, with less stuff than the 86 one.

I also own it for quite a long time....!!

Infact my dad bought it years befor.....!!
Reason for its popularity is that its balanced from every angle like handling, braking, power, weight drive smoothness These cars are still better than those local crap PKDM editions they build especially of SUZ***
Though its hard to find clean one nowadys
but no doubt this car is awesome...!! One who never drived is aweso...

car was ahead of its time. the reason for being popular even in 2013 is because it can swallow any engine in its bay so u hav a variety of options in petrol and diesel.
Whenever a bird shits on my car, I eat a plate of scrambled eggs on my front porch just to let them know what I'm capable of...

fait uno is the eighth most produced car. it had also been assembled in Pakistan but dunno why it stopped. its aerodynamic and design made the lowest drag coefficient of 0.34.

86 corolla is and was the one of the best car that was manufactured by toyota.
I love everything about 86 corolla its grip, power, handling, braking everything specially its interior.
It has a lot of engine swap options.
With a slight modifications and a swap it can beat any car of her class.
I love 86 corolla more then car."86 corolla ki kea baat hai"

No doubt it was an amazing machine with reliability next to imagine in any new car. We kept many cars b4 and after this one but no other car can be so much reliable, easy to maintain, comfortable and yet strong and sturdy to serve us for more than 6 yrs.

Just to compare it wat currently I've (City 05 iDSI), corolla 86's clutch plate was replaced after 250k KM's, in city, I changedthe whole pressure/clutch plate set at merely 120k. (Even then Honda pitstop guy told me that I've driven much more carefully as an avg mileage for cluch plate of iDSI is around 80-100k.)
The defogger of a 5 yr old city is no more working (it started with 2 circuits gone bad after just 2 yrs -entire defogger gone out of operationby this year) while the defogger of my beloved old corolla 86 was perfectly working till the time, it departed us in 2007 after 21 yrs of life. No point even discussing about the cheap plastic in today's cars. No doubt I still miss it....!
We have a city idsi 2004. The odo is near 4 lac km. It's pressure and clutch plate are still the same as of day 1. Bro it's the way you keep your ride matters the most.

Whats wrong with you guys? how can you compare an 86 model corolla with the current one?
i had an 86 AT( my dad had it infact) & an 88 MT TX model as well, no doubt they were good cars at that time but no where are they near to the current corolla . They were good in their own time, consider them antique now and stop comparing with the new models.
