well i dont have any better idea, but i normally wash my car's engine with mitti ka tail because it vanishes in couple of seconds.
basically what i do is .
    1. i got to service station and ask to wash my engine with pressure from bottom
    2. then i give them mitti ka tail (cover cdi and cng kit vid shopping bag) and use it instead of water
    3. then i take fiber cloth and start detailing it (haat se saaf kerta hu)

it is bit head ache but my engine shine lasts for 1 or 2 weeks. i think mitti k tail tou vanish ho jata hay aur jab tak aap safai bhi ker chukay hogay. aur us kay baad once in a week jab aap apni gari ka oil, radiator, waghera chek kero tou halkay num means bht geela nahi jo bilkul moist kapra hota hay na uss se wip ker lo engine ko.

well i use to do this (sorry guys no hard feelings)

Yes it is not advisable in new shape because ECU is out in the open. i guess cleaning with petrol mitti ka tail, some engine cleaners or Steam. and drying it with air and starting the car after a while.

I usually get my Engine area washed by air pressure. It gets cleaned very well with that. I too avoid to wash it with water or any other lubricant indeed, as i am told not to do so by Toyota motors...

kerosene will completely harden wires and pipes.. why do you want to wash the engine in the first place - leave it alone, you dont sit in it do you? have you ever seen an engine room of a car in europe - filthy black grunge etc (no matter even if its a mercedes benz)

btw quenching a hot engine with cold water is asking for disaster - very hot metal (like exhaust manifolds etc) will warp or crack - and mildly hot like cylinder heads/block will sometimes warp too.. - If your engine has suffered an oil spray, leak etc, wash it when cold (that means the car will be at home) - with degreaser and water, then if you can apply polish to the painted metal parts it'll help in saving them from corrosion.

    bahi loug
its clearly written on the inside of hood not to go for jetwash , so ptrl, kerosine oil u need to spray with that pressurized container of service station.

What I do is to blow air in the engine before every carwash.
and after two or 3 days open the hood in the morning while the car is getting warming up n clean the engine with dry cloth .

Just give it a normal engine wash without the Kerosene or furnace oil (miti ka thael) nothing will go wrong with it, I give all my cars an engine wash once in a while to have that engine spanking clean.

Though I would listen to what @Luckybilal has to say as that is going bling on the wash

Dont use water jet to clean the engine...but the pressure from your garden hose wont do your engine any damage...and when you go to a service station to get your car washed, just tell the people there to reduce the pressure of the jet when washing your engine.
