@Khuziz and Cylestyne:
The 5 speed automatic gear configuration meant 4 speed forward, and 1 speed backward. The automatic transmission on the 1.6 will be the same as the current 1.8 Altis. This transmission is the international standard for all 1.6 Corolla's. The automatic transmission is gate type shift with super ECT.
The new 1.8 Altis (not coming to Pakistan sadly) has the new 7-speed forward and one speed backward configuration called the CVT-i. It has 7 speeds to achieve maximum fuel economy by keeping the car under 2000 revs even on high speed.
The six-speed manual transmission that was mentioned was actually 5 speed forward and one speed backward. No corolla in the world (except for the XRS although im not too sure) is offered with a six speed forward manual gearbox. Neither is any Corolla in the world offered with a 5 speed forward automatic gearbox.
Hope that clears the confusion. And like Ashfaq87 said, I too am a diehard Toyota fan. But 1.7 million for a smaller engined Altis? Not my cup of tea. Will be going for the Civic VTi MT inshaAllah if this new Altis isn't priced competitively.

My lugnuts require more torque than your Vtec can put out...
Altis has the second worst resale in corolla. 2.0D takes the lead.
One hardly finds any customer for Altis. And if customer is there then you cannot ask for like 18 lacs for a 2008 Altis. Where as 2008 civic Oriel Pros in mint condition is always way above 18 lacs. Thats the difference.

more over if corolla got CVTi tranmision then y are u saying its a 7 speed? wat i knw abt CVT is that it does not have any specific number of gear it have infinate combination....
please tell me wat am i getting wrong?
and finally the obvious ques... when will this corolla hit the showroom???
I appreciate a good body regardless of the make
He is referring to virtually restricted gears. The CVT you are correct doesn't technically have a fixed number of gears, however the software which runs the TCU can make it behave like a gearbox with "X" number of gears. Its the same thing as the 7-speed CVT Steermatic.more over if corolla got CVTi tranmision then y are u saying its a 7 speed? wat i knw abt CVT is that it does not have any specific number of gear it have infinate combination....

Nice.... Toyota should have introduced 2.0 Dual VVTi that would be fun
fresh from the Rumour mill of IMC:
GLI to be 1.6 with manual and auto
altis 1.6 also with cruisetonic and some added option on GLI
anyone to authenticate!
I have already booked a 1.3L GLI so GLI stays 1.3L
Otherwise I think there is no point having a 1.6 gli and also a 1.6 altis
Yes I also think that gli will be 1.3 as there is no sense of altis and gli having same
Engines. I'm pretty sure that xli and gli would come in existing engines but with face lift and altis would be 1.6 with cruisetonic and manual transmission. And 99% sure that it would be dual vvti, let's hope for the best. Regarding price according to my information all variants will be 25000 to 40000 approx more in price.
Get over the fact that Xli lacks power windows, Its an Xli because it lacks thoose features or else it would be a Gli or an Altis if had all the goodies.
There is no point of having two 1.6 variants in Pakistan. Atleast we cannot expect this from Indus. Maybe GLi/XLi will have the same engine where as Altis will have the ZR engine.
