    Default Corolla suspension cluttering noise

    Aoa guys,

    I own a 1972 TE-20 Toyota Corolla which is driven only on petrol, so mechanically (powertrain wise) it is very well kept mashallah. Now the thing is it needed a little front suspension work done as was prescribed by my mechanic. After charging me around 8000 bucks, he did work on the Ball joints, bushes and steering box (which btw is worse now; earlier it only had a little play and now the play is showing it's ugly butt again along with creaks & grinds whenever the wheel is turned towards the right hand side), etc. The suspension now is another saga altogether. The wheels were straight & inline before, now they just sit crooked to the right side and the right tyre makes a screeching noise every once in a while. Our genius ustaad tells me to get an alignment and the crookedness and the screeching noise will be gone like it never existed. Is he right?

    Anyways, the main reason why I had agreed to have the suspension work done was a cluttering sound from both front suspension (right side and left side) whenever I encountered a pothole, even going at 10 kmph it used to clutter noise upon hitting a pothole. And now....surprise surprise, the sound came back after a couple of days and it's louder than ever!

    Now I am astonished at the fact that after investing in ~8000 pkr on the suspension, the ailments are still there (mainly the clattering).

    Tell me o wise PakWheels what shalth I doeth?

    Any good & honest suspension gurus in Karachi?

    I want Xulfiqar to chime in too (hey xulfiqar I'm the guy with the te-20 from Karachi if you kinda remember!)

    Thanks for reading guys.

    it seems he just pressed the worn out rubber bushes and didnt replace them
    and the press job didnt last much.
    in short he charged u for parts replacement and just fixed existing ones
    and yeah alignment will finish the screeching noise. get it done ASAP if u want to save the tyre life
    Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

    forget shah jee - his work is mostly cut and weld stuff.

    I would look into the car myself and see whats making that sound - mostly the upper strut mount bearings fail making it knock on potholes. And as I mentioned in a post of mine, buy a tub of silicone grease and apply it to the bushes when installing, then pay attention while tightening, your hub should support the entire weight of the car through the strut (driving position) then tighten everything solid - it pays to buff the bolts clean and also clean out the nut receptacle threads in the subframe

    The front end clunking should be identified first - then proceed to fix that. Dont just throw money at it

    btw if your alignment is severely out including messed up camber - you will have great play in your steering and the tyres will scrub even while driving straight.

    have it checked too

    @Xulfiqar
    The thing is I was not present all of the time while the car was being repaired. I know Mistake #1. I should have stayed at the workshop.

    I would bring the car to you for an inspection IF you were in KHI.

    There is no neg. camber. The right wheel just sits a little crooked to the right side. Maybe as one brother said earlier, it just needs an alignment. I'll get it done asap.

    I don't know about the steering box, the play just DOES NOT go away. EVER.

    @aantherax
    Thank you brother and jazakallah for the contact info. And yes I've been hearing from a lot of people about some decent suspension shops in the FB area locality. I'll definitely go and check out the one you've mentioned.

    About the 8000 bucks thing, you know the mechanic i went to is not a bad person, i mean I know him through a friends father. He's just all talk and no walk kind of a guy you know. Talks too much, thinks he's the master of all. He is very good with engines though. All in all lesson learned. An expensive one lol.

    Update time:
    Due to shortage of time, I again went to the same mechanic and told him of the recent symptoms (steering noises, cluttering suspension & way improper alignment of the front right wheel) and he said he'll take apart everything and look for something broken.

    Well he said the alignment was out and was getting worse (reason unknown) and also said that some balls in the steering box assembly were crushed or broken. As of now, the noises from the steering are gone, but the cluttering is still there and now the steering turns towards the right more and towards the left less.

    Something that i figured out is that maybe the cluttering is come from the brake pads as according to him they are not seated properly. the reason that he gave me was that the pads for my car are not available anywhere and he has installed the best possible alternatives. He said I can weld the pins for the pads and the noise will go away

    Anyways, next week I'll be taking it to the shop suggested by Mr. aantherax to see what they have to say about the noise.

    I also want to get it checked for alignment. Can anyone tell me what exactly is done in an alignment job?
    And are there any good alignment shops in Karachi?

    I'll also be getting new steel wheels and tires soon inshallah as the old steelies are too worn and old.

    Thanks for reading guys.

    I also have same sound coming from my vitz. This sound comes whenever i turn to right. I will also go there and give Mr. Khayrul Wara's reference.
    and supaman2jz, i think you already have done the suspension work from there. How was it? Plz share.
