Khokhar Sb, congratulations on new purchase...its good to see you have opted for Carputer route; looking forward for your expereince I myself has decided to drop chinese units and instead go for some similar solution. I have my eyes on RevoSys; their ATOM powered standard 2DIN unit specifically.

Khurram Bhai, I am so happy to know that your car is going high-tech .... MashaAllah

I looked at the Revosys system. It looks good to me. Just make sure that you get card for 5.1 surround system. It will markedly improve your listening pleasure. Since, such systems are built with very small components, it would be difficult (perhaps impossible) to find components if you decide to change later.

I suggest that you also look at MP3Car.com - Recent Blogs Posts - Blogs and Mobile Computing Solutions - Innovations in Mini ITX for other options.

The Revosys has two USB ports at the back and one mini-USB at the front. Once you start using, you will realize that you need lot more USB ports .... Of course, it is possible to use USB hubs, but then all USB devices do not get 5 volts each current.

I suggest that you also consider separate CPU carputers. Perhaps the only problem with such CPUs is their location. Dashboard does not have enough space behind it to house as amplifier sized computer .. the MoCoSo system I have selected comes with 10 USB ports.

    My best wishes ...

Khurram Bhai ... one more thing

It is not easy to use the car computer the traditional way e.g. Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Media Player ... For this purpose, Centrafuse is used. I did not see the option for Centrafuse. It is very important to use Centrafuse interface (or RoadRunner) ... Cost of Centrafuse is about 80 US Dollars .... That would be an additional cost.

Come on ... you are one of Laadli's uncles !!!

I called a friend to check if he was available .. he did not attend the phone, so I came home ... so no awaragardi today ...

I dropped off the driver so he could rest for a while ... InshaAllah I will leave home around 5.45 pm ... and go to Madhouse ... lets hope we can get the system running ..

We will have to do the wiring again. We could not find zero gauge power cable .. we have ordered it but it will take couple of weeks. We will replace all the wiring harness once we do it again.

I think Bro Spitfire's thread is chugging along ... I can see new posts coming ...

He has not come to Islamabad so far, so .. shaed hamain hi channay laikar Lahore jaana paray ga

Revosys already has 5.1 surround audio option; so its taken care already. Yes it has limited USBs. I selected Revosys due to its standard 2 DIN size; one can swap out and plug into any new car easily (I assume)

I am watching your thread; will be seeing what you will be doing. I might alter the plan accordingly. I will be doing shoping late in summer vacations; making a plan to visit kids' Mamoon in Europe. So have time

Right; using standard Windows is hard in Car Configuration. Centrafuse is "SHELL" / Program made for Windows which provides touch friendly interface. You are right; we need one such software.

Using standard computer opens up more possibility; one may use Android Operating System; which is touch friendly and very light comparing to Windows (which is bloated due to general purpose Operating System); but one will need required drivers as well.

Yes, I think it is better to wait till my system is up and running. In case I run into any pitfalls, then you will have time to rectify the problem before hand.

Swapping to other cars is easy ... even in the LCD I bought, the vendor has attached a Toyota sized frame around it ... so if I want to shift it to another vehicle, then only required change would be to get hold of that vehicle specific frame only.

Accessing the USB ports ... of course, even in my MoCoSo model, the USBs would not be easily accessible. I have planned to use extension i.e. about 6 wires running the USBs together and then use something like a larger USB hub to attach devices.

I am watching your thread; will be seeing what you will be doing. I might alter the plan accordingly. I will be doing shoping late in summer vacations; making a plan to visit kids' Mamoon in Europe. So have time
You have Honda Civic and its dashboard seems difficult to use something other than a 2-DIN sized unit. Since you are planning your unit in later summer vacation, why not look at possibility of using IPAD or IPAD2.

I suggest you also take a look at this

Ram Mount Pod I No Drill vehicle Rod With Apple iPad Cradle Holder Mount

You can integrate the IPAD with your stock unit.

We did a detailed survey of android machines available ... our expert in this case was Brother Walid Janjua ... you can consult him in this regard. MashaAllah he is a very talented computer engineer. He is very ambitious. He actually wanted to build a Laadli specific computer from scratch ... We just followed the easier way.

While Centrafuse is required to be original ... it needs a unique software key, the Roadrunner is perhaps free. You can do research on this. Again, for sake of easiness, we decided to spend some money and go for Centrafuse ... the standard best interface.

I suggest that you search YouTube for IPAD in car installation, Centrafuse, Roadrunner.

Another desirable thing in car is to have On-Board Diagnostics ... our new vehicles need OBD-II. You can either go for a BlueTooth unit, or a wired one. I have opted for the wired one. If you decide about BT, then you can even use the same BT OBD-II unit to display the vehicle diagnostics on your phone screen.

Rahman Bhai ki gaari chal paray to phir thori dair chalti rehti hai ... I originally belong to Lahore, and Lahore has an upper hand in variety of channay ... the top most is Ghulam Rasool in Nila Gumbad. Second one is perhaps Abbot Road/ Lakshmi Chowk. Third one is Chikkar Chollay around Masjid-e-Shuhada. Our Islamabad Melody Food Corner is of course the best in Islamabad.

It is a very good question ... I think he does not sleep ... you can ask him when he comes online. Whenever I have called him, he was awake ...

    My preferences are simplle
    1. something in-dash to avoid clutter
    2. something with standard size / wiring; so I can plug-out at the time of sale; as no one is going to give me anything for such things
    3. something I can program myself; (i am a software guy)
iPAD is good; but it fails in each of the three above; I dont have MAC @ home and programming iPAD requires MAC.

OBD is fascinating; how each and everything in today's car are ECU controlled and OBD reachable; from windscreen water nozzles to headlights. It was fun watching Honda guys testing everything from computer. But I guess things are not documented into that extent.

It would be fun to see what you guys able to achieve! Do let me know if you need any software assistance down the road!

Khurram Bhai, your preferences are like a dream to me ... I follow the difficult path

So my advice becomes very simplified .... go for the Revo-sys system, plus Centrafuse interface, and OBD Scantool. That should give you a very neat 2DIN no-nonsense system

I did not share earlier ... we are going to have WiFi HotSpot in the car as well. Easiest would be to use PTCL Cloud with provision to attach 5 wireless devices at the same time. That should take take care of my 2-phones, my Laptop, and the carputer plus one additional available for any passenger in the car.

Khurram Bhai .. I have researched this system as well ... it is very simple, but the display is toooooo small. The price is not announced as yet, but I am sure, it is going to be far more than the 2000K dollars or so that we are going to spend on other carputers.

This is a big step to leave traditional head units and move to carputer ... so lots and lots of research is recommended.

Since you are into software engineering ... why not also explore nettop and shell PCs as well. We can discuss your findings later
