    Have a 97 with 2e engine.

    First of all this engine did not have the amazing slide carburetor from the 88 corollas. Secondly, the engine was completely powerless under 4000 rpm and i had to get jets changed.

    Engine gives blue smoke in cold winter starts. Problem is a valve seal which is common in Toyota engines. Other than that, it has been faultless.

    Cheers.

    Engine is expensive even in scrap market... cost around 32k ... on other hand you can buy 4EFE for 25k ... more valve and EFI

    Knocking sound on idle is alarming may be its not coming from engine ... and if its from engine then you should contact your machanic as soon as you can...

    @muneerahmad:
    might be due to over advanced timing, btw as u've elaborated much so all i'd suggest, get it checked from ur mechanic, if not from valves then could be from crank/connecting rod.

    The knocking sound might be coming from the Tappits, needs tightening. But refer to a mechanic for the possible problem...

    I bought a corolla 86/91 with 2E engine 3y ago. Only problem was its vacuum carburettor. I couldn’t found any mech who could adjust air fule mixture. so a got rid of it & replaced it by corolla indus carburettor. The marriage was perfect and now i can see water in exhaust pipe even on cng !!
    I haven’t found any problem other then its carburettor.

    pros:
    2e ( 1.3 l carby)is one amazing engine. tough. easy to repair. doesnt heat up easily, can go anywhere in Pakistan and yr at home if yr car breaks down and you need parts.

    cons: doesnt have good acceleration. its only 60 hp, but still it gulps fuel like 1.6l efi

    PS;
    plus if you cut fuel on carburator on 1.3 carby,,, it losses all the power it has

    2e for general use in Pakistan is fine, good tuned car easy crosses 160km/hr with a/c on,,i remember i had a 93 rolla with 2e , top speed 196km/hr,, on bridgestone 155/80/13, one time (tuned by a toyota pro, who is working now in Sharja) then i decided tires are not in safe zone,, at that speed,, it seems car was capable of touching 200km/hr that time,, so without powersteering, and good intake/exhaust 2e is not really a bad engine, obvously dont expect sportscar standards,, but hey look at the bright side,,, even mechanics in villages may fix problems in yr rolla if anytime yr stuck.... this is not so in case of efi engines.

    @owais88

    Instead of swapping 4A-FE or 5A-FE from your stock 2E, I recommend you to go for 4E-FE, its a cool engine, Although its 1.3L but Twin Cam 16Valve, Good performance with economy...

    @levin

    Boss completely agree with you on the matter. Had to get the jets changed on my 2e carb to get more initial acceleration. ALso got better economy.
    Replaced the rear muffler with a free flow resonator. Amazing sound with a better revving engine.

    Engine definitely is bulletproof and still quite expensive in the second hand auto parts market.

    Cheers
