Default Corolla 88: Engine change or Overhauling?

I have a Corolla 88 with 1.3 carburetor engine of some year between 1995 - 1998, I'm not sure. The engine is pretty much dead now and is being a real pain in the *** every now and then.

I have two options; overhauling this engine or getting a new engine.

A new engine would cost at least 70K which is a lot. My mechanic says overhauling will cost around 30K and the engine will become almost like new. This option seems affordable to me.

Now my question is; is it true? Will the engine actually become almost like new with the overhauling? Will it run a like 1.3 CC should run? Is it a good idea to get the overhauling done?

    Thanks for the reply guys!

I actually wanted to know if overhauling is worth it. My engine is pretty much dead right now. Will overhauling bring it in competition with some other 1.3 CC car? Will the engine become as good as new?

New 1.3 engines are very different, both mechenically and electrically. Thinking that overhauling will bring this carby engine can bring this car in competition with other 1.3 engines is just a thought.

    change it
new complete engine will cost you around 60K (in exchange of your old engine and without gear)
overhauling wont work as you are telling that its dead now

in your Toyota Corolla car the engine type is 2E. Overhaul it, when doing so make sure that everything is done in proper order with maximum OEM parts. Note down the mileage on odometer. Clean the radiator as well, put back the thermostat in its place ( a suzuki bolan thermostat temp rating 82 C fits well in 2E petrol engine) get the cooling fans on radiator properly wired to work automatic. use only coolant prepared in bottled water. - I have a Corolla EE-90 with same engine ( but auto transmission) overhauled twice last rework is only 31000 km old when running on petrol i get approx 11.4km / litre with aircon in city & over 55KG cylinder in city randomly i get approx 90/kms per tank.

an efi swap will cost you over 100,000 with complete rewiring & ECU mapping.

    I suggest an Overhaul

swaping the engine wud lower the market value of ur car as well. so get an engine overhaul with Origional parts. the used engines in bilal gung also need rings replacement most of the times as they been int his condition since ages.

I will say change the engine. Or buy half assembly of your 2E engine but make sure its not opened or repaired before.

Rebuilds in Pakistan are not so good thx to mechanics with little knowledge.. Plus this little 1.3 motor with all these rebuilds loses its power/sound and everything.

Plus you cant just rebuild an already 4 times rebuilt engine. Baki app ke marzi.

Hmm Again you dont know what you are talking about. Why would anyone want to buy a 2E 1300CC Engine car on CNG which is pain in the *** to drive with 4 people on board and not buy a good 1600CC 16 Valve newer technology EFI engine with much better power engine noise reliability above all twice more economical than 2E and an engine that was designed for this car with no modifications required?

The reality is with 2E your car will not sell so well but with 5A or 4A it sells better and at better price thats my personal experiance. I sold my Corolla 88 which I bought for 460 lacs with this silly 2E, Swapped with a healthy outstanding 5AFE and sold my car easily for 550.

vaqas bhai jan engineswap mai khurcha zeyad aur car ki value down ho jai gi. EFI engine ki performance zabardast ho sakti hai magar engine agar 1 dafa bigur jai tou uss ko qabo karnay k leaay xulfiqar bhai jaysay log nahi miltay haar eik apnay tukkay lagata hai aur ecu ki walda hamsheera zouja sai rishta jorta hai qabo phir bhi nahi ataa engine overhaul mai 30000 - 35000 hazar taak khurcha ho ga agar koshis kar k maximum japani parts mil jayn taab warna 30000 k ander andar engine furrataay bharay ga with economy.

swap ka khurcha engine aur wiring mila ka 100000 - 150000 possible hai

Leave the value bcoz i know market and car's with EFI Engines swap are selling at better prices now a days no one likes old noisy leaky engines. The Day i swapped engine my 88 I saw car dealers tellling me sir app ke gari ke value main 1 Lac ka izafa hogaya hai so un sey bahtar cheezo ko DE VALUE Karna wala koi nahi hai :p.

Get proper wiring done tu kiun masla hoga? these are very simple EFI engines. My both swapped cost me less than 60000 Rs.

Khair I had experience thts why telling you I also got my 2E rebuilt wasted my 25000Rs on it and end result was no improvement in power it was still the under powered engine only improvement was it stopped burning oil and was like original.

I am saying all this bcoz app 35 lagao gey phir bhi you will get an engine jo pahla din sey ustaad jee kaha gey sir es main sey thermostate valve nikal dey aur fan direct kardey kiunka engine abhi taighte hai :p.

EFI swaps are only good IF everything is in order and properly working, everyone can make an engine start - that job including swap costs Rs 60,000/- (e.g.) - To get everything working and not DIY with soldered wiring, correct fusings and safety systems - it would cost another Rs 30,000/- That only is possible if you somehow get a sensible person for wiring the engine up.Ask Vaqas - he had to sort out his own wiring, another member star2 has become "electrician" himself after sorting out his nissan EFI. Its not everyone's cup of tea.
