Default Xulfiqar Bhai: Need help! 1999 JDM Corolla fuel consumption

    Salam to all,

My 1999 JDM corolla aka corolla II has fuel consumption problem. It has a 5AFE with automatic transmission and the engine is in a very good nick. I take care of all the tunings, filter and spark plug changes etc. It is running on petrol. It is giving me 9 - 9.5 km/ltr in the city with AC which i think is on the high side. I was hoping for something like 12 km/l. Could there be any problem with my car? Keep in mind that it is one hand driven only and i am a light footed driver. Plz advise.

for a 1500 efi engine auto trans with aircon 9 ~ 9.5 km/L is Good average if you are using stock wheels of size 14 ( 185/70/R14 ) on ur car. with size 15 wheels it will be below that.

For experiment you may try - on next fuel lamp ON, fill the fuel add up 10 litres HI-Octane to 30 litres of super petrol from your trusted fuel station. Note down ODO reading & drive around as usual. At next fuel lamp lit-up fill tank from same fuel station with only super petrol and note the consumption again at next fuel lamp litup. that can give you an idea about fuel quality to get better average.

Thanx a lot @capsat. Today i also changed my petrol cleaner and have started using STP petrol treatment with my fuel to clean any clogged injectors. Hope this helps. And yes u maybe right about this being a good average but i also use probox and airwave and they give me an avg of 12kmpl with the same driving style. This is what has started me asking about the performance of this vehicle. I will try what u suggested at the next fill up. Ur help is really appreciated.

don't be surprised if at any weigh bridge you find your [ weigh when empty] Corolla Sedan heavier in comparison to airwave & probox ( both being work wagons of their class ) give it a Shot too !

driving ur car with low fuel is not good for fuel pump health specially for 14years old car.Better fillup full tank and after 150kms fillup again.Use fuel ratio as suggested by capsat.Im receiving same mileage frm my 1.5L 07 Vitz.In winters without a/c it use to give around 11 12kms easily

get a very good multimeter and read the voltage of the O2 sensor while the engine is idling and at normal operating temperature.

You can take readings from the diagnosis box in the engine room from its pin marked O2.

It should fluctuate between 0.3 and 0.8mv consistently and should immediately respond to throttle input. If not then the sensor is either dead, blind or lazy. replace it with a NEW GENUINE DENSO part (no old scrap) and test again. It should be normalized now. Also clean the injectors and replace the main fuel filter before doing any final judgement.

the sensor is located under the exhaust manifold. pop up the lid of the engine and look for a cable attached to a switch, hidden beneath the cover of the exhaust head attached to the engine.
