Default 2006 Xli gets first throttle body cleaning after 170k.

We have driven Xli 06 model upto 170k with all regular maintenance except the throttle body. The car never developed any issue. My mechanic would never open the throttle body despite my asking him so many times. The car recently developed a problem, it would drop RPM on idling and I would have to give a throttle to it continuously. Took it to mechanic and this time he opened the throttle body without even me asking for it. It was filled with A LOT of grime. It was cleaned and now the car runs smoothly.
I wish I had get the throttle body cleaned after every change of plugs.

    You have a sensible mechanic!
Here every mechanic has the urge to open the thraatal baady 5-6K kms.
A little bit of dust wont bother it but if you mess with it too often- it WILL bother you.
Get it cleaned and lubricated by toyota 3s every 20k kms

170k, you must be joking and you should have also got the intake manifold cleaned as opening it was additional 2 minutes job.

i disagree. That guy is a stupid mechanic! theres a reason why cars must be periodically serviced. so that they never get to the point where they start developing troubles. im sure a clogged throttle body would have been straining almost all other parts of the engine, wud reduce the efficiency and performance as well. its always recomended to get the throttle body cleaned every 20k kms like u said. regardless of what the mechanics say...

If you get a chance to clean idle control valve then you might notice that it will be blocked the next month or its movement might not be as smooth.

That’s why good mechanics apply little bit of oil on it after cleaning it and throttle body should be serviced after every 10k, very easy to do and requires periodic maintenance.

    You have a point there...

open the TB only if it develops a fault, your mech is actually very sensible. There is absolutely no point in opening the TB on every oil change. And also you can spray a little bit of WD40 or Carb cleaner every 10k to even avoid opening the TB at all if environment is dirty. This will elongate the life of butterfly as it wont get scrapped with the TB duct.

I used to work at toyota 5S dealership. There, i used to clean throttle body every 10000 kms. Other then that, on CNG cars, it gets clogged every 5000 kms so I always cleaned it properly at 5000 kms. CNG installed engine gets more carbon deposits in the throttle and IAC valve is almost chocked. the rpm are running up and down mostly.

It scares the normal road side mechanics to open a throttle body and clean it. even i ave seen people working in Honda and toyota dealerships who are scared of opening the throttle body. they just get rid of it by spraying some carb cleaner. the inside of an IAC valve is properly cleaned by removing it out from the throttle. cleaning its inside and then lubricating with a few drops of oil.

PS> There is no harm in opening a throttle body and cleaning it properly even at 5000 kms as far as you know how to get the job done

It's not even that high a mileage; my '04 Cultus with 320k km on the clock has never had an engine rebuilt; it just had its seals and valve guides replaced recently. Still going strong.

The oil grade needs to be increased while the mileage cross 100k. How can you still use that much thin oil.
