Default Corolla Axio X 2007 CVT Issue

    AOA Gentlemen,

I bought a Corolla Axio X 2007 from Pakwheels couple of days ago, the body condition is good and ODO reads 61,000km, it?s 2013 import and registered only 3 months ago.

But it has one major problem, my understanding is that CVT is supposed to be smooth unlike conventional auto tranny but this car when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear generates a grrr grrr noise for a second or so, engine also vibrates and engine feels like losing power. On slow and gentle acceleration its more noticeable and strong but if accelerated hard the noice and vibration is is bearly noticeable. After this there is no noise or any vibration and I?ve tested it upto 160kms and it runs smoothly.

I?ve got it checked and my mechanic says that the back mounting of engine is broken, and he suggests that we should clean the CVT oil filter and try changing the CVT oil to resolve the problem. I?ll definitely get the engine back mounting fixed along with cleaning of CVT oil filter but question is whether this will fix the problem.

I also got the car checked in Lahore by Adnan motor?s main person on Multan road (apparently he is the best tranny specialist in Lahore and costly too) and he is picturing a troubling picture. Scenario 1 , if forward clutch is weak or gone then it will cost 45k to fix it, Scenario 2, CVT is gone then it will cost between 95 to 125k in Lahore and total expense will be around 140k. Now that?s awful lot of money.

Could the experts here suggest any other good/reliable tranny specialists who I can consult ( in some other thread a guy in Model town was quoted but his where about are unknown). Also if someone has had the similar CVT issue please do share also with the solution.

    I highly appreciate suggestions.

the transmission mounting, transmission fluid & oil filter change is rightly recommended by your mechanic, go for it. In the meantime ask him to check the engine mounts as well. - you may panic later if problem stays.

firstly your transmission has no gears its a cvt.

secondly the prices are pretty cheap for repair. is the mechanic using junkyard parts?

if the oil additives are worn out the transmission may feel like its having stick-slip problems. immediate change is required. you also report of noise. that is major bad news in any transmission whether cvt or not.

also test for water contamination of the cvt fluid

    AOA,

Just got the CVT OIL filter cleaned up ( magnets were pretty much wrapped in particles/dust) and checked for itengrity of OIL and added 1 litr new CVT OIL. Still the problem is there. Mechanic did not recommend to change the fill oil in case we have to go for AVT gear assembly and it will waste all 7 litres )

The issue with engine mounting is very minute and mechanic said no need to change the mounting as problem is very minute.

Although today I noticed the noise and vibration slightly subdued even on low speed and felt little better, not sure whats happening. Can someone elaborate that since it's CVT then why it feels like car is switching gear and there is a slip/noise/vibration when moving from 20km-35kms and this does not happen on initial pikcup or on speed above 40kms. @Xulfiqar please share your thoughts.

Now I am trying to find out a CVT assembly in local market and people are telling me very high prices ( 90-125k) and someone told me to find out if CVT assembly can be imported from Dubai car junk yards. Can someone comment on this or guide maybe. Really appreciate your help.

I also have a Lancer 1.3 2006 with 119k and Allhamdulillah there are no issues.

The AXIO car looks in pristine condition body wise, engine sounds very nice and there are no apparant issues. It's the CVT tranny which is a spoiler... I'm sure the car's ODO has been reversed and it would be around 150k mark since it's a 2007 model...

Inshallah I will find a way to fix it, maybe sell it or spend more money to get it fixed.

If the 1 litre of new CVT fluid helped then your CVT fluid is completely worn out. If you feel this

pull - pull - pull - in high frequency at 35-45 km/h - its supposed to feel like a slipped clutch manual transmission when accelerating.

then the torque converter lockup clutch is chattering. The CVT fluid additives are supposed to take of this and lockup in CVT occurs very early to maximise fuel efficiency.

the particles on the magnet are clutch dust and burnt oil along with normal wear of parts.

The price of a fresh CVT unit is nearly Rs 350,000/- you can get a mechanic to rebuild it for you but make sure to use 100% new genuine parts (soft ones like clutches and seals) - the cvt pulley stack and chain is also considered wear part and can cause noise if extremely worn out. I have never seen it but have heard of it from some rebuilders I know. OTOH I have seen broken chains of Honda city gearboxes due to cooling failure or wrong oil choice, btw Honda CVT is the worst CVT fluid in the world just like their ATFs (useless)

all in all - this is all normal ownership cost of such a car - its a JDM import meaning no local technical support and no guarantee of availability of parts.

Sir this is not concerned with pldm ot jdm
It depends upon whether it has been badly abused or taken care of
If the previous owner has hever taken care of the car and never had changed cvt oil or filter in time then these problems are bound to happen
So stop this pkdm and jdm war
Every machine needs care to run smoothly

for ATF in Honda mobil1 is better than the poor ATF Honda sells. Be sure to use the ATF of mobil1 that says multivehicle, otherwise you need some friction modifier in a bottle (lubegard etc) to blend with full synthetic ATF.

    AOA @Xulfiqar,

Please share which location/store is best to get authentic Toyota CVT fluid or eneos CVT. Kindly do share the price per litre.
Also could you be kind enough to share any knowledgeable mechanic's details who can look at the Axio CVT issue and guide me , perhaps maybe rebuild it for me.
    thanks a lot.

Go to any Toyota dealership (3S) for oil. Its Toyota CVT-TC and its for around 4500-5000 for a 4L can.

buy a genuine honda filter and any API SJ rated 10W40 or 5W30 oil. It will work nice - usual change interval is 5000~6000 kms.

i face exactly the same problem. i have a 2007 fielder awd. the problem is that the response of car to acceleration is not up to the mark. the rpm meter revs up but the speed does not increase . feels like the power is not being transmitted to the wheels. its ok ( i think) in low speeds with ligh foot on accelerator. but the moment you press the foot down, you sense something is not right. changed cvt oil recently. did not help too much. what else can be done before knowing for sure that the gear box needs repalcement. plus what is the price estimates for transmission replacement? and what is a good place to get the car checked in detail? i am in islamabad.

    AOA,
@hash4u Lahore's market is too hot I guess and part hoarders are hoarding the CVT + engines as these are used in premio, AXIO and fielder. Could you point me out where in pindi full CVT tranny can be bought for less ? I am also getting information from DXB if cvt tanny can be bought from there for less.

I am definitely going to get the tranny repaired, first attempt will be to get it repaired rather replacing it. if this works then awesome otherwise will go for CVR replacement. Let's see what Allah has planned for me.
