Default Here are recommended oils for Corolla

Have got the manual of Corolla & gone through the Oils page.
Here are the details what Toyota recommends in their manual issued by Indus Motor Company Limited.

    ENGINE OIL
    2NZ-FE 3.7L (with Filter)
    1ZR-FE 4.2L (with Filter)
    2C 5.1L (with Filter)

    Oil Grade: 5W-30 and 10W-30
    API Grade: SL, SM

Can also use 15W-40 and 20W-50, SL or SM grade.
    (Page no. 280, Lubrication System)

    For Diesel Engine: G-DLD-1, API CF-4, CF, 5W-30 and 10W-30 (Page 282)

    COOLING SYSTEM CAPACITIES
    2NZ-FE 5.2L
    1ZR-FE 5.5L
    2C 5.9L
Coolant type: Use either of the following
    > Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.
    > Similar high-quality ethylene glycol-based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
Note: DO NOT USE PLAIN WATER ALONE.
    (Page 284)

    GEAR OILS FOR MANUAL TRANSAXLE
    2NZ-FE 1.9L SAE 75W-90 API GL-4 or GL-5
1ZR-FE 2.4L SAE 75W Toyota's Gear Oil LV or equivalent. API Grade is only GL-4
    2C 2.5L SAE 75W-90 API GL-4 or GL-5
    (Page 285)

    GEAR OIL FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
    Fluid Capacity 6.4L
    Fluid type Toyota ATF WS
    (Page 286)

MY TECHNICAL SUGGESTION FOR CHOICE OF ENGINE OIL (its not in the manual though. lol)

Please DO NOT be panic to find only the SL or SM grade engine oils because manual says so. Plz don't. Instead, try to choose SN Grade oils (which is latest standard) and more importantly already covers all the characteristics & properties of previous grades.
Example: SM grade oil surely has the properties of SL, SG, SH, SJ, grades (the older ones, but it will not meet SN standards). Hence if you will choose SN, then it will automatically be having properties/characteristics of SM, SL, SG, SH grades plus the new ones which makes is SN.
    Hope clear.

    No Guts, No Glory.

Repeating again "GL 5 and GL 4 are not compatible. You cannot use GL-5 in car gear boxes where a GL-4 only is specified. This is the case most probably with Corolla Altis 6-Speed gearbox. So the best bet is to study the owner's manual and find out which specific gear oil suits your cars transmission. It's not like SN automatically qualifies in place of SL or SM."

Also as I remember my Honda Civic 2005's manual didn't even recommend a GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil for the transmission. It specified simple motor oil 10W-30 if I remember correctly.

Here we are discussing only Corolla (XLI, GLI & 2.0D)
And manual says that both gear oils GL-4 or GL-5 can be used very well.
For other cars, it may be different.

so, if both GL-4 and GL-5 are recommended then GL-4 is a way safe bet.

    GL-4
The designation API GL-4 denotes lubricants intended for axles with spiral bevel gears operating under moderate to severe conditions of speed and load or axles with hypoid (see note)gears operating under moderate speeds and loads. These oils may be used in selected manual transmission and transaxle applications where MT-1 lubricants are unsuitable. The manufacturer's specific lubricant quality recommendations should be followed.

    GL-5
The designation API GL-5 denotes lubricants intended for gears, particularly hypoid (see note) gears, in axles operating under various combinations of high-speed/shock load and low-speed/high-torque conditions.

I started using 5w-30 Total in GLI 1.6 after 12k km, previously using petron 20-50, when i go for oil change after 5k of using Total. I ask the mechanic to check oil, is it smelly or dirty etc. He says oil is in good condition, can run more miles but Oil is smelling. may be ur car heats up that can be a reason. I want to know is that becx of engine oil issue

Why do you use 20W50 oil. Switch to a lower viscosity oil

Sir there are many such additives available in the market and these companies are making money by telling people that if you just add this 100ml xyz additive in your fuel tank, add 5 liter petrol and then magically your car tank will be totally filled with all High Octane, the engine will take rebirth, car will not consume petrol on idling, the average will increase upto 25Km/L, you wont required to change engine oil upto 10K, and more over your car will automatically open the door when you will approach nearby it and you can read news paper on driving seat while your car will drive itself to the office & back home.
