Default Corolla Axio fuel economy woes

Hello. We bought this car after hearing that it gets good fuel economy (better than the domestic Corolla at least), but so far we've averaged 12 km/l. Besides changing the spark plug and possibly the oxygen sensors, what other measures can we take that would prevent a likely-inaccurate reading?

How many kilometers has this car done so far? Mileage depends upon different factors. Most important are driving condition, engine condition and fuel quality. If you are using air conditioning, that 12 km/l is good mileage then. You will get it better when air conditioning and lights are not in use. Some recommendations:

Change spark plugs if you haven't yet
    Clean the throttle body
    Change fuel filter/air filter
    Clean the fuel injectors
Get the wiring checked for any leak or sparks at joints. That can put load on alternator and increase fuel consumption
    Avoid quick acceleration

And most importantly keep your tires properly inflated like in summers 32 front and 30 rear while in winters 34 front and 32 rear

I am not getting the 14+ mileage either. Close to 12 in local with a/c - normal according to the experts. I have noticed that the consumption will remain the same even for highway if driving style is aggressive.

That is sudden acceleration. Sudden stops and do check the first post of Axio fan club about maintenance and parts:

It really depends on the condition of the engine, catalytic converter and other maintenance parameters. I own an axio for the last three years and it has never ever given me less than 13.5 with AC under heavy acceleration. With a light foot it gives 14.5 plus with ac.
My car has done over 100000 km now.
There might be something wrong with yours. Get it thoroughly checked.
And Lastly. .. if you're talking about hardcore city driving where you have to idle for 10 or 15 minutes at jammed intersections, or if you leave the car running with ac on while shopping, then 12 kmpl is totally natural.

It totally depends on your driving style. Last year, the least I got was 12.5'ish (I think) with AC and I drove aggressively. This summer, I've calmed things down a bit and the mileage is back upto 14+, do note 40% of my daily route is highway so that probably has a positive effect on my fuel economy as well.

My suggestion? Look at the thread @mashriqain linked and don't experiment with the car unless its giving you problems. Try to change your driving style a bit and then see if the mileage improves a bit.

I'm sorry for reviving this thread, but it would feel rude not to reply with all the helpful comments posted so far.

"How many kilometers has this car done so far?"
Around 80,000 on the odometer. You'd better believe it has done more than that.

As for air-conditioning, we've started turning it on a lot recently due to the Lahori heat. It's on whenever we leave the house, but we dial it back to '1' after it's been on '3' for about 15 minutes.

"Change spark plugs if you haven't yet
    Clean the throttle body
    Change fuel filter/air filter
    Clean the fuel injectors
Get the wiring checked for any leak or sparks at joints. That can put load on alternator and increase fuel consumption"

We've done all of that apart from the wiring part. Had the remaining done yesterday, so I'll report back on the economy. We're actually very passive drivers; gentle on the accelerator at all times, which made the calculated mileage all the more surprising.
