Gaskit issue can be diagnosed by seeing if engine oil is reducing, or if engine oil is milky or if engine oil cap is milky underneath, coolant reducing or there is oil in coolant or coolant in oil, is there white smoke , does the water fly out of the radiator cap when it is opened even when engine is cold and running,

if you have any of these symptoms then you have bad head gaskit, its typically caused if engine has ever overheated or has high milage, repair cost i don't have much idea, risk is that the you might have to get the head faced as well which is additional tourble/ cost plus the new gasket might not fit properly and may fail again in the future, and no it doesn't reduce car market value, if you keep driving with a bad head gaskit you will wreck your engine, but before replacing check for the above symptoms

no sorry don't know repair cost, if you have any of these symptoms then do go for headgaskit, but what i have seen mechanics are too eager too suggest headgaskit change even though the problem most of the time is caused by something else, its easy money for them and it can takes 4hours to a day to change headgaskit depending on the condition, just look for symptoms if any of these are there then its better you change head gasket, head gasket cannot be repaired its always replaced. just get everything on the head checked when replacing gasket also so that gasket fits perfectly and the problem is not somewhere else

go for compression test 1st, so you exactly know what has actually happened. you are more worried for value of car ??

once a vehicle is registered and odo have crossed 4 digits the depreciation starts, so leave that question aside, Ask yourself what is cost of replacement of same vehicle in today's date would repair be feasible or disposal at less value is equal to cost of replacement.
