Default My test drive of the 2014 toyota corolla grande CVTI

    Hi there,

I just test drove the new 2014 toyota corolla grande CVTI.

I own a 9th gen civic so i shall compare both- i will try to be as unbiased as possible (https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/mem...tec-navigation)

    NB:
These are my opinions and i may be wrong. i just test drive cars and write unbiased views. however if i have upset your toyota heart in any way, please accept my apology in advance and don't go on swearing here and causing the mods any trouble. I am very sensitive and take such comments to heart as well so please be kind however you can argue with me in a positive manner so that we reach a conclusion which benefits all potential buyers here

I called the toyota walton motors dealership yesterday and spoke to the sales staff there, they said that they shall inform me the following day at 10 AM when the test car is available.

I got a call at 11 AM and was asked to bring my
    1. orginal ID card
    2. Original drivers licence

When i arrived at the dealership, i was asked to sign a form stating that i will be liable to pay for any damages.

The sales person and the security guard accompanied me on my test drive. Unfortunately none of them knew how to drive so i can't comment on the back seats comfort, but being a corolla, i am sure it's very comfortable

okay, now the test drive... the speedometer looks good.. yes it's not as good as the '13 civic but its a definite improvement over the previous gen corolla.

There is no eco button in this car, however the eco sign becomes green when you drive economically.

I am glad they have a temperature gauge in this car since it will be driven on all sorts of roads in every part of this country- even stolen and maybe taken to afghanistan

what's the fat "grip" thing on both sides of the upper portion?
The cruise control setting should have been on the steering like in the civic. this seems too "bland"

The steering itself is chunky and better to hold than the Civic.

the small vents have a reasonable throw. the guard sitting at the back said that he was comfortable (dunno if he's telling the truth - since he's a toyota employee )

however, not having a clock here would have been preferable . this looks ugly

the android based navi system is like a high end phone.. smooth and very nice to use.. much better than the 9th gens windows CE based navigation system - I have no idea about the new android based system of the civic.

couldn't check the maps since it didn't have a sd card inserted

stupid air conditioning controls - they aren't even smooth

the toyota sales staff say that an upgrade is highly likely next year. they will give us immobiliser, climate control, new alloys

however, this is not confirmed. honda was saying the same about the upgrade of its navigation to android when it was launched in early 2013. they said it will come in 6 months - it took them 1 and a half year !!!

the best part of this car- the gear!!!! what a smooth tranny... and it's definitely smoother than the civics ... and 7 speed , with paddle shifts and triptronic

the steering paddle shifts are not visible so i'm sure they will be ignored... but the acceleration and gear shifting is way better than the civic..

i used the paddle shifts too, you press the "+" paddle to shift up, and it goes into the gear the car is being driven in and then goes up and up and up... to 7th gear.

downshifting with the paddles is excellent too, no lag there either

the seat had plastic sheets on so it wasnt very comfortable- I am not going to comment on that.

however i felt the lack of an arm rest- the centre console can't be slid forward like the civics.

this is quality stuff, this won't fade (i hope not )

looks really nice. But, i would prefer cupholders to be in the front rather than here.

whats wrong with PKDM handbrakes.. toyota,honda.. they all slant their handbrakes to one end

    the rear seats-

unfortunately , the area between the seats and the door sill isn't padded like the civic- i found those particularly comfortable on long trips

but the reclining seats are awesome !!! easy to use, you just have to pull the encircled lever and recline the seats.

and the rear seats fold as well
