Default Engine oil getting darker quickly advice required

    Hello,

I have a toyota corolla 1995 2e engine. I am currently using zic A 10Q-40 it gets really dark at around 400-500km. I usually change it around 4000km. The mechanic was saying Zic A which is semi synthetic is the problem and I must shift to a mineral oil 20W-50. I am using toyota genuine oil filters and was reading some of the posts on PW regarding it and it is mostly due to engine not getting up to proper temp. So:

    1. Is it fine to use semi synthetic oil in such an old engine design?

2.Should I shift to a 20W-50 oil? If yes then which brand is good total/pso/shell/zic? (please dont tell brands like liquimoly/mobil1 which are hard to get).

    3. As my car doesn't have a thermostat valve and engine doesn't heats to proper temperature is it the likely culprit? or has the oil pump gone bad?

    4. Does anyone knows a good place in north nazimabad karachi to get good genuine oil?

first of all get the cooling system fixed and make the fan auto and put back the thermostat valve, if the oil does not leak or consume then no harm in using semi synthetic, its a way way better in terms of fuel consumption, response and engine cleanliness than 20W-50, good oils and especially synthetics have good cleaning power so its not a bad sign if oils get dirty quickly meaning the oil is doing it jobs of suspending dirt and particles to be filtered by the oil filtered, however 400-500km is way too early and you should seriously get the cooling system fixed, otherwise your engine would die very shortly
If everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane!

Thanks both of you for replying. Problem is all the mechanics I have talked to now are really reluctant to put the valve in place, also sometimes back I had the engine block welded because there was a leak. Obviously it was wrong of the mechanic that he should have replaced it. At the same time it was my ignorance as well, as I later got to know through pak wheels that I should have replaced the block.

Engine oil to get dark is normal - nothing to be worry.
engine oils are designed to keep the dust particles in oil so that it could be drain while changing oil. If you don't change ur oil for long interval then it is possible that dust particles in oil turned into sludge in oil pan because oil no longer able to keep the dust particles.

On next change - first use engine flush. And also always change the engine oil on specified intervals only. Sometime people change oil too early and next time too late.

Also do u change oil brands and viscosity frequently?

flush cooling system and please use coolant prepared in bottled water, get the thermostat valve in place and rig the fans to work on automatic. Shell HX-7 is good available at all shell stations. Nearest for you will be next to hanif hospital on left when heading towards bridge from KDA roundabout.

engine oil get thick black when used after 3000KMS this is so because they clean engine impurities! but i am not sure that 400 to 500 kms is the right milage to get the oil black!

majority of the people who maintain their cars properly use Caltex Halvoline (for you 20W-50) or Castrol of the same grade! Zic is also a good brand!

    Just to add
On direct fan - engine oil never gets to its operating temp and get dark too early.

Again thank you all for your valuable comments. I donot change the viscosity and brand frequently I have been using zicA 10W-40 for around 3 years now. Secondly I calculated the mileage today at which it started to turn black its around 1700km. I usually change the oil around 4000km as I said. I will tomorrow attach a pic of oil condition hopefully tomorrow. Thing is I cannot put in the valve back in as I am afraid as the engine block has been repaired it will leak again. Once this happens it would be some long work.

Do you change oil filter with every oil change?

If not then the dirty oil filter is the problem.

Clean pcv valve and keep fan auto with thermostat valve. After cleaning pcv valve, my engine oil stays much cleaner than before.
