Default Toyota Corolla 2003 gulps petrol, have tried everything

Hi guys, my Toyota Corolla 2003 EFI Automatic is consuming too much petrol these days (6 km/litre, no CNG installed). I have had the spark plugs replaced, engine tuned, fuerl filter replaced, oil changed at regular intervals, tire pressure is OK but nothing seems to work. Online some people recommend to replace the MAF sensor (which i clean regularly) and the oxygen sensors, and the dealership suggests getting fuel injectors replaced as well. All these repairs cost well above Rs.80,000 which isnt worth it. I am hoping to get parts from eBay or online.

I am open to suggestions and leads as to where I can get these parts at reasonable prices in Islamabad/Lahore.

I got injectors cleaned ultrasonically but that didnt help..auto transmission fluid was changed a couple of months ago, everything else is maintained regularly, the last thing im going to do is have fuel pump checked. Have tried everything else so far to no avail. The mechanic says air flow sensor works so no need replacing.

    Check fuel pressure
Check if the TPS works and is adjusted properly
Check for vacuum leaks, make sure there are none
    Check valve clearances

I'm assuming that your car has run well above a 100k kilometres. . You probably need a valve clearance job to be done

check vacuum leak, replace pCV valve by default after buying from scrap yard, the one sold for 2013 corollas, cross check the tappet settings. you will not find anyone with simple device fuel pressure sensor, go back to nazir autos and ask him to check the fuel pressure. its hardly a five minutes job andalso ask someone to disconnect individual cylinders to cross verify if ignition coils are working properly or not.

P.S: Mr. Atta 03115135516 based in Rawalpindi has exhaust analyzer, if you ever felt then need to contact him after all the above services for final adjustment.

and its not necessary that the engine check light has to come on for a person to run a odb2 scanner! sometimes the ecu stores codes but does not display them via check light! ur knowledge abt cars seems weak!
Not even Toyata or Honda motors has ultrasonic injector cleaning machine, I agree that this important service requires ultrasonic cleaning machine and without that you cannot verify that. But manually cleaning in worst case scenario also helps. This vehicle has variable resistor instead of oxygen sensor for feedback mechanism. Without having access to LTFT, STFT its little hard to diagnose the issue and oBD test won?t give you anything except if you are interested in looking at values of coolant temperature sensor from cold start till engine heats up to see if its working and see if MAF sensor is ok or not.

Fuel pressure sensor is simple device which will easily verify if problem is coming from fuel pump. Hardly a 5 minutes are required to verify if fuel pump is ok or not without the need for changing it first.

Please don?t change fuel pump before verifying.

You need to go about it systematically to save yourself from spending on anything that does not require to be changed. Start off by taking out the plugs one by one. Check the color of the plugs. If all plugs are blackish or dark colored, the engine is running a rich mixture, but if only one or two of the plugs is dark and the others light colored, the injectors in those cylinders may be leaking. If one of the injectors are leaking, the car would take longer to start as well and would emit black smoke upon starting as well. If that is all fine and all the plugs are similar colored, next try replacing the MAF sensor. Your mechanic says that its 'working', even while its working, the maf sensor if faulty, it'll cause the mixture to become rich while the car keeps running fine. I've had the same issue a couple of years back, and replacing the MAF sensor fixed the issue. The MAF sensor brand new, costs between 3.5-4k but you can get a kabuli one from Mithu Khan ka ahata (Pindi) for around Rs. 500 which works fine after cleaning it. Another way of going about it is to try a MAF sensor out of a known properly working car just to confirm if the maf is at fault. All variants of this corolla use the same MAF sensor, 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8 altis.

And as per my knowledge, the SE Saloon doesnt come with O2 sensors. If it does come with O2 sensors, you could disconnect the O2 sensors, which would make the ecu switch to the default a/f mixture stored in it and then drive it for a couple of hundred kms and see if it has helped. If it does, replace the O2 sensor(s).

probably the valve clearances are way off spec.

also - please note that too much cleaning with ultrasonic machines can damage the injectors - more expensive names in the business like BMW, MB, VAG, GM etc have a "correction" that is written when the injectors are cleaned out (very rare)

I have a chevy impala 2001 with original delphi injectors that have been on the rail since the car was new (160,000 miles) and the car still performs like a champ.

The best time to go there is before 11 a.m. You get your turn very quick. And they're very good at what they do. I'm their permanent client.
