Swapping engine may be the cheapest option but it will not be the best, getting engine # changed on book, sorting out wiring problems etc... Best option is to overhaul engine either from Toyota 3s dealer( expensive but worth it) or some good workshop you trust

I also got 2005 altis and same problem but even driving with top up the oil. Still couldn't decide swap or rebuild. 150,000 seems very costly while it's half cut available in 90,000 total

why not take step of compression test, - at 150000 ` 180000 any idea when was the timing belt changed. without having a maintenance history there are multiple reasons of white smoke.

at blink of an eye 'suggesting' swap or an overhaul is not a wise idea . A vehicle with reasonable maintenance history of fluid changes 180000 kms is just the beginning of 'over the top period ' not ' done & over ' engine life.

Compression Test........! DRY And WET As Suggested....!

If Valves Of Both Test Are Not Much Diff....Then It Means Your Valve Seals Are Leaking Quiet Much Also......!

For Rebuild...If You Have Access To GENUINE Toyota Rebuild Parts (Rings, Valve Seals , Gaskets ,Seals Pistons) Along With Proper Mechanic Who Can Do It As Per Required Then Rebuilding Can Be Done..........

If Its Going In Hands Of Illiterate Mechanic...Then I Won't Suggest Since Its Real Risk Of Going All Your Money in Vein....You Best Bet Then Is To Get Kabli Assembly...

I also have a altis which is perfect till now although it is 88k driven and another altis in family which is driven 315k mostly on motorways and is still in perfect nick may be 1L in 5k km which is acceptable for it. Get compression test done and see what are dry and wet values then decide what to do, white smoke at startups is usually bad valves and seals.

yes - dry is always troubling, well lubricated is very comforting

dry means WITHOUT oil squirt, wet is after OIL squirt check the videos over daily motion -
