don't force it and show it to some a/c expert, he'll remove the panel(starting from gear box all the way up to a/c controls) and find the problem.

if you pull the knob it'll come out but thats not the issue, mine same knob in 2006 altis was hard, i took it to toyota 3S they dismantled only the knob part by lying in the footwell and accessing it from there and applied some grease, it worked like a charm never had trouble again, they didn't disassemble anything from front, i would advise the same

Same thing happened with my 07 xli. Went to my usual workshop. Electrician opened the centre pannel and fixed it. As per my understanding this happens when u try to move the knob to select for front defogger. It stucks one position before that and if u apply the force, wire behind the knob gets dislodged. Initially I thought problem was with my car only but latet I noticed the same issue in a Cousin's 07 Gli. Seems like a common issue in these models.

yup the knob in my 2.0d saloon get stucks at the position where it is indicated to use fresh air(i thought it was to prevent me from selecting front defogger with recirculated air) and requires a lil more force to move to front defogger.
