Question Corolla Altis 1.8 (2006) RPM issue

    Hi everyone,

I have recently bought a Toyota Corolla Altis from a cousin of mine. The car is generally in a very good condition but it seems to have some issue with it's RPM. When I hit 100kmph, the rev is almost on 3 (3000 rpm) and goes up to 4 (4000 rpm) on hitting 120kmph only. This causes A LOT of engine noise and obviously affects fuel consumption too. The engine has a lot of power and keeps on accelerating smoothly to 160+ kmph but the engine noise makes it almost impossible to drive at high speeds.

The car was converted to CNG but driven only around 5000km before taking the kit off.

I have consulted 2-3 different mechanics and all seem to be clueless about the issue. One of them even said "yeh is model ka masla hai".

I have also attached a couple of pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its pretty normal. Every 2006 manual altis has this gear ratio and this 1.8 engine is a fuel guzzler.
I guess you upgraded from honda city or something. .. so this feels noisy

This is an issue with modern manual cars, unfortunately. A work around is to cruise at 110 km/h max, and/or use HS P&G (section IV, 3rd heading).

Or, just turn up the music volume .
_ 22 km/l from '03 VTi automatic, with plenty of room for improvement

Thank you for your input guys. I don't like the noise because the other car that I have is a Toyota Belta 2009 1000 CC. At 120kmph it hits max 3.25 RPM. This Altis goes at 4 RPM at 120 kmph. So this should be normal then?

    @khurram.rafique

Have you done tappet adjustment. Best place to do this work from 3s.

Also service the Throttle body and re set the tp sensor to oem values.

I had an Altis 2006 it was super quite all the way till 160 (max i ever did on it) check your front wheel bearing may be they are making all the noise, and do check the engine Throttle sensor which i am sure is not the issue ....

Altis 1.8 uses the same gearbox / ratios as for 1.3, So yes rpms are very high on motorway. Don't worry this is not a fault, just a design flaw. The 1.8 is very good and can handle it very well. It should still get you 13kmpl on motorway. Around town normal use gives 10-11+kmpl.

For engine roar at motorway speed, consider a good (loud) music/ sound system!

Sometimes, in addition to engine roar, the tyres rumble/noise/roar adds to the noisiness!

if you were worried about cruising on the motorway should have gotten automatic one instead, my 06 automatic altis sits at 2900rpm at 120km/h, but its as quite as the newer models, which i can confirm from measuring levels of decibels as i have both new and old altis and not just a loose guess.

my fuel economy on motorway is 15km/l
