Default 11th Gen Corolla (Hornet): An Unlucky Affair

Introducing Corolla GLi 1.3 (Super ECT)
Asalamoalikum respected PakWheel members and guests.
Alhamdolillah, Allah has blessed me with this brand new car after I let
Viper go to its next handler and keeper, after a very satisfying experience of a little over four years. With blessing from Allah (S.W) and friends like you, I hope to make this is a no-nonsense, extremely informative and enjoyable thread just like Viper. This cannot be possible without your support, appreciation, critique, guidance, sharing and participation. So hop in, like and subscribe.

But, the driving experience has not been anything more than average. The only aspect in which this car stands out (at the moment in Pakistan) is its shape.

    Default An exhaustive review

Stark Naked Review...........Direct From The (Neighbour's) Backyard

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568408

Love It or Hate It, Agree or Disagree, But Do Read It
    Background
I come from a middle class family living (satisfied Alhamdolillah) on a salary being father of four school going kids and a mother to look after. Budget is the biggest dictator here. That being said, I'm also a keen enthusiast with impulsive nature who would shell out even the last penny to pursue a sane choice. I live in Pakistan where the choices are limited and the options available are not commensurate with the features offered at insane rates dictated by vehicle manufacturing companies not less than cartels running their own lobbies.

Decision Making: Confusion, Confusion and More Confusion. After disposing of Viper I had almost 15.5 lacs in hand and about 5 lacs saved/loaned. I'm the kind of guy who would spend even the last penny if my mind is set on something. Yes, call me impulsive, fool, anything, but that's my description and I don't step into ladies' shoes when it comes to decision making. But Ice Cube can better explain my situation:

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568413

    Initial Options:
    * New vs Imported
In this category I didn't have any decent choice. Toyota Axio, Premio (old shape), Fielder, Rush, C Class MB, and what not. Couldn't quite get to set my heart on any one of them. Those which were nice required another 3+ lacs which I didn't have and was not willing to spend.

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568414

    * New 1.8L Civic i-VTEC (Base Model): Let me not kid you guys. I'm a Civic fan boy but with that budget and auto tranny being the lead requirement due to the reason that my left foot and left hand had had enough of local traffic. Couldn't pick up wife's calls (that meant war at the end of the day), mom's calls (that meant that I had turned into a Joru ka Ghulam), boss's calls (that meant screwing with my yearly appraisals) and most importantly my girl friends' calls (that meant koi aur).
    * 2014 Used Civic Prosmatec: Searched a lot but didn't find any car to satisfy my extremely OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) nature of getting a low mileage, scratch less and pristine Civic Prosmatic at that price. But most importantly, the 9th Gen has grown over us. It's been on the roads since 2013. I'd hate to see a facelift just around the corner.
    * 1.6L Super ECT "So Called Altis" Did someone say Corolla 1.6 "Altis". Seriously? It's called an Altis now? That too with Super ECT technology that's there in the GLi 4-speed AT? Whatever happened to the 10th Generation 1.6 GLi Auto?

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568417Corolla &quotHornet" -1568418

Well, marketing, shall I say? Here came the biggest dilemma. I was like a pendulum oscillating between the GLi A/T and 1.6 Altis A/T. But for the difference in price (1,25,000/- plus) getting just a half cocked Entertainment System (Without Navigation), vintage 8 year old design alloy rims (which by the way you could get slightly used for 19,000 in pristine condition). Oh c'mon Indus Motors: You could do better than that. I mean are they kidding us? Rest everything is the same?

    Spot The Difference Contest

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568415Corolla &quotHornet" -1568416

I needed just a slight push off the cliff and anything out of these would have done it: Altis optitron instrument cluster, tweeters, steering controls, full infotainment system, chrome door handles. Alas, but nothing else was offered. Not my cup of tea, let?s move on. I wasn?t interested in the option of super white colour since most Altis are Super White, most Xli are white. Had owned almost 3 cars previously in silver (in a row) so no Silver this time.
The only thing I considered to be worthy were, um, well, uh, actually, umm, "Nothing". I mean paying an additional "sawa lakh ropaiya" would have bought me a 1.6 GLi with an Altis badge, 8 year old alloy wheels, a half cocked multimedia unit and striking resemblance between both cars. Simply Wow. Simply Spectacular (Yeah Right). Damn you Indus Motor Corporation.

    * Corolla GLi (Auto): Next up, Super ECT Automatic GLi 1.3L Toyota Corolla (Yayyyyyyyy). No Brainer.

Default Review Is Not Over Yet Folks

    Corolla &quotHornet" -1568451
You Guys Wanna Hear a True Horror Story?
It was 28 March 2015. I departed for Peshawar while being in coordination with a close friend who was already there doing the PDI. I reached late. There was a little nip in the air and slight drizzle that gave you pleasant feelings. But by the time I reached, the sun had set already and the warm assurity of daylight (though it was overcast) had long gone. I could see lights running on generator sets and UPS and the darkness of the night (courtesy of WAPDA) had already announced its presence. The way people were driving and crossing roads was surely a sight to remember. It was the new season of The Walking Dead. I mustered up some courage and moved with vigor hoping to slash some zombies, burn down few vampires and blow away evil spirits coming in my way to get hold of the new ride. I reached the place where the dark knight was waiting for me to reign. My heart started racing, eyes popped and adrenaline rushed through the veins like crazy. I could hear my heart pound in fear, excitement and the fear of unknown. My friend greeted me with his evil grin and dark circles beneath his eyes while handing me the keys of my future ride. He offered me a cup of tea which I suspected of containing human blood. God, no, it was not my time to turn. I bid him farewell and rolled out of the large iron gate and kept seeing his evil smile in the darkest of the night in the rear view mirror.
I was now riding the Black Hornet. The fragrance of the new ride and the fluttering of plastic covers on the seats against the cool breeze excited my senses even more. I further rolled down the window. The motor of the power window was like music to my ears as I couldn't really hear the engine. It was joy, fun and a feeling of paying so much to Indus Motors for this ride. But I was happy.
My eyes immediately stared down at the beautifully illuminated blue instrument cluster. Like a mermaid with deep blue eyes expressing her desire for you. Just as I was familiarizing myself with the mermaid's eyes, I saw that f****ng yellow light screaming at me and slapping my idiotic face "You A-Hole, this thing needs gasoline'. With a smile on my face and a petrol pump just around the corner, I steered the Hornet into the station. But it was deserted like a ghost town. A quick full beam of the extraordinarily designed multi-reflector headlamp lit up a board reading this: "Bijli Band Hai, Petrol Dastyab Nahin Hai'. Disappointed, alone, frightened in the dark, I made my way to another pump with the same issue. Finally the PSO Pump in Defence Peshawar had some venom for my Hornet. I pulled the hi-tech fuel lid switch on my right in style that pop opened the lid instantly. The guy, no less than a grim reaper approached me with a smile and asked how much did I want? I quickly put my hands in my pocket, then the other pocket, then the other pocket and screamed out "WTF!! I forgot my wallet in Islamabad". Imagine taking a brand new ride at the petrol pump only to find out you forgot your damn wallet. The F, The F, The F. Sh*t happens
Embarrassingly, I pulled out Rs.1500/- that I had and asked the petrol guy to fill in Rs.1000/- worth of petrol. I just had to keep the remaining Rs.500/- for Toll Plaza and a cup of tea that would have tasted hell in this scenario. I called up my friend to borrow some greens but he was not picking up the phone. It was almost 11:30PM. I started off, with prayers and repentance from Allah and more prayers to be able to reach my home in Bahria Town Islamabad. Cruised steadily between 90-100 KM/hr (light foot). By now it was a race against time and fuel. Cursing myself all along the journey.
I reached Shell Pump near PC Rawalpindi and took a sigh of relief. Lo and behold. The MID reading of the range displayed 80KM still. No, no, no this can't be. I'm either high, dreaming or the MID is BS**t. But really, it was not. I still managed to squeeze many KMs out of it. Talk about fuel economy han? The Hornet had made its impression.

This "ancient 2NZ-FE" riles many people, but it is one robust engine and has great fuel economy and now it comes with SFI, a step up from EFI for even better fuel economy and power.

Reasons for not getting the 9th Gen this time are:
** Its almost due for a facelift (whether it comes or not)
** Higher registration and road tax costs
    ** So so fuel economy
** Nothing exciting or worthwhile to upgrade to from an 8th Gen

Calling the 9th Gen a "Civic" feels a bit awkward.

    Sir
Been following your previous thread silently
loved almost every bit of it
Congrats on the new car. Allah apko naseeb kare.
Just a small question, hope you won't mind
I observed that you spent alot of money on your civic, no harm in that. The money spent was worth the goodies. just one question, why spend so much on a base model civic. You could have got a top of the line variant and then spent on it. Like it just makes more sense to me that way.
Now again, you got a GLi and will most prolly spend more on it too. Not saying that you shouldn't, just saying that why not a grande?
corolla or civic, your choice leken why not a top of the line variant?

I myself kept the middle variants of corolla for quite some time. Phir got sick of the fact that my car doesn't have this, it doesn't have that because it's not a top line variant. So then got a top of the line civic 2014 with every possible option and extras lol

Dear Asfand. That is a very valid question and logical approach. Before anything else I gave a background of myself in Post Number 7. The fact is, that shelling out that kind of cash in one go followed by the filer/non filer B/Sh*t, registration is a big deal (for me at least). Who wouldn't love to get his hands on a top of the line variant. But lets face it, Grande is not for the rest of us. It is for a specific target market. While I can't put a 1.8L CVT-i with paddle shifters into the "Hornet" but I could notch it up a bit. I expended a lot while building the Viper. You are absolutely right. But this time around, things are somewhat different Inshallah. I value your concern and point noted also.
