Default Engine Oil Selection after 10K drive Corolla XLI

    Hi,
Guys I need your advice. I have Corolla XLI 2013 Just completed 10K run.
Previously oil was changed by Toyota at 5K and they used 20W-50 Petron multigrade toyota oil.

Now I plan to get the oil stuff changed from elsewhere, But I need to choose the right Oil.

I have taken a look at the Manual of Corolla. Here are the recommended Specs for engine oil.

5W-30 and 10W-30: API SL (Energy Conserving) or API SM (Energy Conserving) or ILSAC multigrade.
15W-40 and 20W-50: API SL or SM Multigrade engine oil.

These are very specific standards of multigrade oils and there is no mention of Synthetic Oil.

A bit on how much I drive, I would hardly do 4 to 5K in one year as I don't drive as much

Which brand of oil would you recommend in your 10K driven Corolla XLI ?
on a side note, please suggest on filter as well.

    Please advise,
    thanks,
    Ahmed

If you hardly do 5k a year then why not get the best oil, try to get Liqui Moly 5W40 fully synthetic or Mobil 1 5W40, year round protection and can go upto 10k kms easily but you can drain after a year.

Use any Sae 5w-30 or 5w-40 oil only for your car and API standard SN.
You can use Shell Helix ultra 5w-40, Caltex havoline fully synthetic 5w-40, Total quartz 9000 5w-30 or any similar oil...

I was under the impression that oils must be changed after 6 months anyways because of their life. They no longer remain efficient after 6 months, even if you've merely driven 2K ? Does this not apply to Liqui Moly or Mobil 1 ?

This is outdated information now. Modern oils in most passenger car applications function well for a year in the sump. User manuals for local cars still recommend the outdated 5k km/3 month OCI for some reason.

You might want to stick with whatever is in the user manual (3-6 months) for warranty purposes. Keep receipts as proof of oil changes.

thats because 0w30 is a thin oil and designed to maximize fuel efficiency. oil like 5w40 is an allrounder with reduced noise but very slightly compromising on the fuel eco part.

I have looked at the specs of different oils, I will probably go with total quartz 9000 5w-30 fully synthetic oil which costs reasonable 2900 Rs and use a guard filter with it.
