Default Higher ratio gears for Corolla

    As salaam o aliakum,

This is my first post at this forum and I'm looking foward to your cooperation / valuable suggestions.

I've got a Corolla GLi 1.3L ,model 2006. The stock gear ratios are very high and consequently the car makes a lot of noise even at high gears (3,000 + rpm at 100km/hr even in 5th gear).

Was wondering if using a different gear box, say for instance from Altis 1.8, would do any good. This would obviusly work only if the Altis has higher gear ratios. Alternately, the individual gears in the transmission can also be changed. The latter option being more cumbersome (i think) and may not work that well.

Would highly appreciate if you can help / guide me in resolve this issue.

    Thanks and regards,
    Muhammadpervaiz

if you want longer gears it'd be easiest to it an autobox from a rolla since the ratios are longer and they are available. it shouldn't be too hard to get the auto to work in your car, but it'd make it ALOT slower in terms of acceleration but the noise will decrease for sure.

I wont change a gearbox just for noise. use bigger wheels instead of fidding with gearbox.

rashid bhai bigger wheels are probably the worst idea sincethey will throw off the speedometer, increase the unspring weight, create excess load on the clutch and murder your wheel bearings (amongst other things)

Not a good idea at all.

If you are concerned just about noise, why not add a bit of sound deadening material? You can add it behind the dash - bulkhead down to the floor. I did it a long time ago with the family Pajero. It was meant to decrease a bit of road noise, so was laid down on the floor. It works. I added thick celled foam padding.

I don't know if it's available in PK, but there is a sound insulation that I saw once in a magazine (Land Rover Owners International), that was basically lead strips sandwiched between foam layers. It's purpose was to decrease transmission roar. Any LR owner can vouch for its noisiness! :d

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the suggestions. However, (and i forgot to add), noise is not the only problem. i had a civic 2002 exi before this car, that had much higher gear / speed range at all the gear changes.
Therefore, the other objective is also to make the car go a bit higher (in speed) at each of the gears. Currently, i have to change gears really quickly e.g 2nd pulls till 75 km/hronly (would like it to stretch it to ~90km/hr), while 1st 'screams' at 35km/hr (45-50km/hr would be nice).

The use of gears from the auto gear box seems to be nice option. However, have any one of you tried that i.e. putting in different ratio gears in the transmission.

    Thanks.

What exactly are you expecting to get from a normal saloon????
you will probably use 5th gear when you reach 300kph.....

check the spec sheet for all models of corolla (GLi, SE Saloon and Altis).

Check the gear ratios and final drive ratio. If the gear ratios are different, then you have different gearboxes. If final drive ratio is different, then get the tallest one for your car. I am sure it will be cheaper then replacing the whole gbox.

    Cheers

I don't know for sure but experience says that gears used in pak assembled rollas n suzukis are differnet than the ones in their japs counterparts. My be the quality is different.

Find a gear box made for a japanese car. One of my friend did this and the gear ratios changed dramatically with lesser noise, higher speed ranges in respective gears and that nice feeling of more power
