    To tech_viz

Corolla does loses against a civic due to aerodynamics

The height of civic is a bit lowered than the corolla and it is a bit eagle shaped as well to cut the friction of air

COROLLA IS ALWAYS CAUGHT BY THE FRICTION OF AIR

NOW THE PHYSICS DOES APPLY HERE!!!

The following is a list of awards won by the Lexus LS, the flagship vehicle of Lexus. These awards date back as far as 1989, when the first LS 400 sedan was introduced in the United States.
#1 in Vehicle Dependability. Lexus LS, J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (1994-2007). The Lexus LS has received this award for 13 consecutive years, more than any other manufacturer.[1][2][3] In 2005, J.D. Power's survey found just 90 problems per 100 LS 430 sedans, the first time in the survey's 16 year history for a vehicle to average less than one problem over three years.[4] In following years, the Lexus LS repeated this feat, averaging just 88 and 94 problems per 100 vehicles in 2006 and 2007 respectively, an industry standard.[5]
#1 in Initial Quality. Lexus LS, among large premium cars, J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (1995-2006). With the fewest number of defects after 90 days of ownership, the LS has achieved the highest overall ranking in initial quality among large premium cars for 10 consecutive years, and among all cars for seven consecutive years.[6] In 2004 and 2005, the Lexus LS 430 was second only to the Lexus SC 430,[7] and in 2006, the LS 430 regained the overall lead.[8][9]
Highest ranked vehicle in reliability. Lexus LS, Consumer Reports Annual Car Reliability Study (1997-2006). The Lexus LS has been among the most reliable vehicles in Consumer Reports surveys for over a decade.[10] The independent publication determined that a nine-year-old Lexus LS is more dependable than a brand new Mercedes-Benz, owing to the wide disparity in reliability scores between the top-ranked LS and below-average German makes.[11][12]
Best Imported Car of the Year. Lexus LS 400, United States Motoring Press Association (1989).[13]
Winner of luxury sedan comparison test. Lexus LS 400, Automobile Magazine (November 1989). The LS 400 outscored rival models from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Mercedes.[14]

Toyota plays it safe with Corolla, Matrix redesignsTom Incantalupo / Newsday

For a practical, probably reliable, reasonably priced and easy-to-live-with car, consider the redesigned Corolla or Corolla Matrix wagon.

But get set to be disappointed if you were expecting the newest generation of this hugely successful model line to be a blockbuster, either visually or in performance.

As Toyota often does when tinkering with one of its winning formulas, it played it safe in redoing the Corolla and Matrix. Maybe too safe. The year is young, but for this driver, these two have been the biggest disappointments so far.

As for the "sporty" XRS versions -- forget them. Save your money or go elsewhere for a sporty car. My two testers, a sedan and a Matrix wagon, both were XRSes and both were plagued by rough rides, numb steering, overly sensitive throttles and foul catalytic converter odor every time the engines were stressed.

On sale since February, the '09 Corolla and Matrix remain good choices for buyers with low expectations for performance -- buyers seeking something a cut above an econobox. Although the Matrix's dashboard had some plastic pieces as cheesy looking as anything the Koreans ever sent us, the testers' were generally attractive and even had built-in telephones with steering wheel controls, something once found only in luxury models.

Buyers of sedans or wagons get to choose from among five equipment levels and two engines. Prices for the sedan start at just under $16,000 with freight for a version with a 1.8-liter, 132-hp. engine and a stick shift. Toyota says that engine is all new. Its horsepower is up from the predecessor's 126, thanks to variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts.

Fuel economy with that base engine is Environmental Protection Agency-estimated at 27 miles per gallon city, 35 highway.

Opting for the topmost XRS equipment level, starting at $19,420 with freight for the sedan, gets you the engine in my testers -- a 2.4-liter, 158-hp. four-cylinder. It's a redesigned version, says Toyota, of the base engine in the Camry. In the Corolla sedan, it delivers 22 mpg city, 30 highway, says the EPA.

The availability of the larger engine is one of the biggest improvements for '09 to this line and the only reason to consider an XRS sedan. (But this larger engine is standard in the mid-level S Matrix as well.)

The Corollas and Matrixes we buy in the metropolitan area come from Cambridge, Ontario, Toyota says.

Toyota says it sought in redesigning the sedan to give it a lower, sportier shape than its predecessor's. Among other things, it moved the bottom of the A pillar (the first roof support on each side forward) and the bottom of the C pillar (third one aft), both of which increase the angle of the window glass and, Toyota says, improve aerodynamics.

The new sedan is almost a half-inch longer than the predecessor, almost 2.5 inches wider, and about an inch shorter in height with no change in the 102.4-inch wheelbase. The Matrix's wheelbase hasn't changed, and, overall, the wagon is virtually identical in size to its predecessor.

As you'd expect in a Toyota, and in most cars nowadays, the Corolla and Matrix have ergonomically friendly interiors, with self-explanatory controls -- all of them lit well enough to be seen in night driving -- plus ample storage cubbies and cup holders.

The extra-cost electronic gauges in the testers were fine at night, but by day, the dark red needles don't contrast very well with the black backgrounds.

A little more lateral support from the front bucket "sport" seats in both testers would have been welcome, but what's there is par for the compact car course.

My sedan's interior was reasonably quiet in highway cruising; the Matrix interior was noisier, as are those of most wagons, apparently because their cargo areas act as echo chambers for noise from the rear tires.

The five-speed automatics in both testers could be shifted manually by sliding the shift handles to the left and then nudging them fore and aft. They operated smoothly in the automatic mode but downshifted unnecessarily and annoyingly at anything more than the slightest touch of the accelerator pedal.

The federal government hasn't yet published crash test results for the new Corolla or Matrix. Nor has the private Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Overall, the 10th-generation Corolla, descendant of a model introduced almost 40 years ago, appears likely to be as successful and bullet proof as its predecessors.

With increased passenger and luggage space, antilock brakes standard and stability control available in all versions, a satellite-capable standard radio, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, standard AC, a split folding rear seat back and two 12-volt power outlets, the new models should satisfy most consumers looking for reliable transportation for the small family or for commuting -- in other words, a trusty appliance.

That's been the winning formula for the Corolla since the first one went on sale in 1966. Toyota has managed to sell 30 million of them worldwide, and it wasn't by taking big chances in design.

To be bowled over or even moderately excited, though, you'll need to look elsewhere. Two suggestions: Ask a Honda dealer about the Civic, and a Mazda dealer for the 3 model.

The Corolla EE80 was probably the best corolla ever produced...

Toyota Corolla (E80). 1983–7 (prod. 3,300,000 approx.). 4-door sedan, 5-door liftback sedan, 3- and 5-door hatchback sedan, 3- and 5-door van and station wagon, 2- and 3-door coupé. F/F, F/R, F/A, 1295, 1587 cm³ (4 cyl. SOHC), 1587 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC), 1839 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC). Toyota may have been late compared with Nissan, Ford, Mazda and Honda in joining the front-wheel-drive bandwagon, but when the E80 Corolla was launched, it blew a lot of the competition away. Highly competent range dynamically and models even had character; relative to the competition, probably the best Corolla ever. Comprehensive range but station wagon and vans carried over from E70 and Levin (AE86) coupé and liftback still on old rear-wheel-drive platform. Sixteen-valve engines for AE86s, developing 92 kW; AE86s developed a legendary status in Japan, considered a classic to this day. Pop-up headlamps for some coupés. Styling completely contemporary with exception of van and wagon, which had an E80-style nose grafted on. Handsome liftback, named Corolla Seca in Australia, where E80 production commenced 1985. Kammback three- and ?ve-door models part of Corolla range in most countries though considered separately in Japan, US and Canada as Corolla FX, Corolla Compact in Europe. New Zealand FXes had regular Corolla nose; other markets tended to have Japanese one. First Toyota Corolla to top New Zealand sales’ charts, thanks to marketing blitz with That’s Incredible’s John Davison.
