    Default facts about road grip of new corolla

    to all corolla owners out there

    as u all know, most se saloons and altis owners have changed the original 14" tyres to 15" in order to give the car a better look.

    well i have 2 SE saloons in my office and have extensively driven both. one has 15" tyres while the other has original 14" tyres. i have noticed 2 marked differences between the 2. would like share it with u all.

    1. as u know corolla has a badr grip as it is, however the car with 15" tyres has a much more shaky grip compared to the car with 15" tyres. especially on highways the car 15" tyres does not feel sure footed and feels swayed by cross winds. the car with 14" tyres still has somewhat an acceptable grip.

    2. the acceleration of the car with 15" tyres is definitely slower than the one with 14" tyres.

    i cross-checked my findings with a technical person at toyota. he confirmed that this is the reason that toyota is not offering 15" tyres in corolla. he explained that bcz of the high-roof design, the car's centre of gravity gets affected if its fitted with 15" tyres.

    Thats good i think we should obey the rules as well as the recomondations by the compney cuz they engineered that vechile but we have not any idea of what the engineering is as the man tells the reeal story so blaming any make is not valid and i belive modification never be successfull at all
    So Modification i think very hard job
    Thaanks to Toyota engineering its amazing that disturbing minor thing change the messive thing

    One simple question. Why Pakistani corolla has arim size of 14" where as all the indian,thai's,N American,singaporean corollas have stock rims of 15" and in sports models rims of 16".I think 15" is the standard size and Toyota Indus has given corolla with 14" to save some money.

    I agree with xain! he is right! ALTIS every where (india,malaysia etc ) has 195/15 tyre size ... so we should get at least 195mm tyres with 14" or 15" but toyota pakistan is saving money and giving us 185mm tyres!

    well corolla may have a bit more hieght but it certainly give this IMPRESSION due to small windows...Once we compare new corolla with 90s corolla nad founf the height to almost same...but new corolla has relatively small windows which gives it a SUV kinda look....

    @Xain.
    THESE are the kind of presumptions that actually light the fuse on my undies. Its the whole negative approach people have towards car makers in general. The reason dear sir you dont get 15s here is because of the HIKED UP ride height which is a requirment of the people here and no they could'nt have given you 15s and come down on the tyres aspect ratio because that makes for a stiffer ride and destroys the whole purpose of hiking the ride height in the first place.
    Dampers (shock absorbers) Every country has different specifications to suit their needs. The ones used on Thai and Malaysian or JDM models has softer damping (higher spring rate) than the ones we use here.

    @Fli_Gti. Hay man save your temper and aggressiveness for some other time. I have seen a fact and stated it.
    Now lets come to the topic. You are saying that they have hiked up the suspension to meet the road conditions. What I understood from this is that in Pakistan we need more ground clearance. So my simple question is if they have put a little bigger (standard) tires and the suspension is not so hiked up will it not give the same ground clearance. I will appreciate if you can tell what’s the point that I am missing here. Cause I think bigger tire with high aspect ratio can give u smooth ride and more clearance. Than hiking the ride suspension and putting lower rim size (we are not talking about car handling here cause in any case higher ground clearance means poor handling.)And obviously it will be more expensive to put bigger tires and rims than raising the suspension.
    About my negative approach towards the car maker. OH Darling you have got a bulls eye here. But I have my personal reasons.
    You see I have got my New corolla ALTIS automatic 2005 in August. This is my second Toyota. Still got my first Toyota 82 with me driving it since I am in class 8th. And Now when I compare the new corolla with the old one I feel sort of cheated.
    You see it has such a bad quality. The Ac grill plastic on left side is not properly fitted. Automatic gear shift plastic cover (one with cheap wooden garnish) is loose and done fit. The diggy lock is not working OK. You have to close it at least 3 times before it locks and closes properly. I was waxing the car other day and the dam mud guard on the front side went inside. Thanks God it came out instantaneously but that brief moment was just like eternity to me. I never ever have one single instance in my life with my old corolla. Similarly when I compare the features that they are offering here in Pakistan and say India and the price I again feel cheated. So many features are missing (Even if u keep in mind the difference in Indian and Pakistani currency.)Like head light position settings. under cover sheets. Digital AC control. Outside temperature gauge and blah blah blah.
    So you see I definitely have a negative image of the car manufacturers in Pakistan but believe me bro I am an open minded person. And if you will be able to explain me the logical reasons of all those -ve things I can be easily molded in the Pakistani car manufacturers lover and praiser like you. And I don’t feel shy in saying I stand corrected. When I am wrong.
    If you walk away from your car and don't look back, you have bought the wrong car.

    basically 90% of se saloons and altis owners have changed their rims/tyres from 185/65R14 to either 185/65R15 or 195/65R15 without taking into consideration the fact that this considerable reduces the car's grip. then the same people complain about the grip of corolla.

    my suggestion is that should someone choose to switch to 15" rims/tyres, they should consider the size 185/60R15 or 185/55R15. this will give the same clearance thereby a better grip. bcz of the current high-roof design and raised suspension, its not very advisable to further raise the car's clearance as both the grip and brakes get shaky especially at high speeds. obviously some ride quality has to be compromised by putting lower profile tyres but then one cannot have everything.

    @Xain,
    very impressive,the way u put it : )
    Mazher bhai,
    if u take a corolla with standard tyres and rims,over any speed breaker in lahore(they are not speed breakers but tiny mountains),with 3 or 4 passengers,the car will still scratch from below.The car is high,but when people sit in it,it drops down(clearance) like anything. Thats stupid : )

    a very genuine observation by Hash4u

    If that car is supposedly higher then how come it still manages to get a scratch from underneath on ormal speedbreakers.
