    Default Cultus Tappet Noise Issue

    Asalam O Alaikum,

    I need your suggestions and opinions about a problem that I am facing with my Suzuki Cultus 2004 (carburetor) car. Before going towards the problem some info on the engine condition:

    a) The engine has clocked 88000 kms so far out of which around 21000 kms were on petrol.
    b) The engine has never been opened and is running on genuine everything including gasket and rings etc.
    c) The car does not reduces any oil no smoke at morning start ups or otherwise.
    d) Till last year the car was running on automatic fan in summers with thermostat valve with a/c and no heat ups. its still running the same way but summer hasn't arrived yet.

    Now the Problem:

    The problem i am facing is of Tappet noise. It has hydraulic tappets which are producing a considerable Tuk Tuk noise. Some observations about the noise include:
    a) The noise is very less when i drive on petrol but is pronounced on cng.
    b) On cng when i stop at a signal for around 30 seconds there is no noise at all but if the car remains on idle for more than that the Tuk Tuk sound appears. If i rev the engine again for some time it disappears.
    c) When the car is standing at an incline like a house entrance on idle the noise starts coming.
    d) I have noticed that the car gains heat and temperature needle comes to the middle a bit more quickly now but remains there and no further heating. this might be a Weham as the climate is changing these days.

    Now my old mechanic says that the oil pump needs to be changed as its not pumping oil with full pressure and in cultus the tappets are running on its pressure. he also says that instead of changing the genuine pump an oil pump kit can be bought and used in the same pump.
    I also took a second opinion from a mechanic and he suggested that we need to open the head and get the tappets redone from a kharadia.

    I have grounded the car for the moment and looking forward to your prompt and valuable diagnosis and suggestions. i am hesitant to get teh car opened as it is perfect so far.

    @Xulfiqar and other senior members your help and diagnosis will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Before reading your paragraph about mechanic's opinion, i was sure after reading point a,b,c &d that the oil pressure is not enough. And i do agree with the first mechanic.

    But before taking the pump guilty as charged, you have to share your maintenance schedule and the oil you use or have been using till date. It can be a clogged gallery (not allowing oil to rise), worn crank bearing(not allowing pressure to build up) or oil pump itself.

    @rustam
    when it comes to the maintenance schedule i have used all these years Castrol GTX 20w50 in summers and 10w40 in winters changed at every 3000 kms. Oil and Air Filter are always changed with the oil. the oil at 3000kms is still not very dark but i change it.

    very true -

    if maintenance schedule is to dot, worn crank bearings & oil pump are 2 basic issues to address before you get work done on valve seats in the head.

    suggestion: get oil sump removed and closely inspect the oil-intake post pics if possible. if mechanic is able to remove either of the crank bearing viewable close-up snaps will help you get more input from forum.

    well it looks like eventually i will have to get the engine opened to get to the bottom of things. because the engine is in its seals i am hesitant to get it opened. that's why i am trying to get a clear idea about the problem as i don't want to dismantle the whole engine just to find out that oil pump was the culprit which could have been changed without opening the whole engine.

    and your feedback is deeple appreciated as i am counting on your experiences.
    still waiting for Xulfiqar i am sure he has some experience with the g10 engine.

    the picture i posted is for reference to what you look for.

    you can have such view of vehicle engine by draining the oil then opening the oil sump (chamber) with car on a ramp on its wheels without removing wheels, engine or gear box from the engine bay.

    You have oil pressure issues - resolve it immediately. Check with an oil pressure gauge on the oil switch port, if you have good oil pressure at startup (70+ psi) cold which drops to less than 10 psi when hot accompanied by slight rumble then you have worn crank shells or a badly damaged pump - it can also be that the seal between the pickup tube and oil pump is leaking and the pump is sucking in a tiny amount of air from that point. It will cause such issues.

    @Xulfiqar
    sir thanks for your prompt response. i have grounded the car till the issue is solved and won't be driving it. i am looking for a workshop that can do an oil pressure check on the car.

    also some mechanics are recommending to put a new kit in the existing oil pump if it turns out to be the culprit instead of putting in a new pump. is that kit useful or a waste of money.

    First of all check, how many of them are making noise, is it one or two or all.

    To check this you have to start the car and let it idle till it warms up.
    shut off the engine remove the head cover and inspect each lifter by pressing it with your thumb while it is in resting mode (cam lobe is not pressing it).

    You should not be able to press them. if any of them does, that lifter is not working.

    If one or two are found malfunctioning then it is an individual lifter problem but if all of them behave similarly then its your oil pump.

    replacing Oil pump gear kit (Fuji, japan) will do the job.

    @smijaz
    thanks for commenting. i surely will do this by opening the tappet cover and checking them. however, on simple hearing i feel that two of them are making noise. will update the thread once i check it.

    The major cause of such issues is running the engine cold (d'rect radiator fan and no thermostat valve) - running cold causes the oil to form sludge in the engine galleries and the lifters (tappets) - This is also aggravated by using bad quality very thick viscosity oils.The cultus engine has hydraulic tappets which requires 5W30 oil - very thin oil to function properly, the thin oil gets pumped very quickly into the galleries and hence into the tappets too, It reduces oil pumping losses and provides good fuel economy too, Point is - do not meddle with the original cooling setup with uneducated guesses.
