Silent Death,
I am quite surprised that you find this a difficult project.... I have seen much worse bugs so to me this doesnt seem very daunting! If you see the 'before' pictures of my white 68, you would go through the roof!!!
Yes it is difficult in the sense that I still have to locate a lot of parts and the body parts which I find (front and rear clips, all four fenders, both front and rear bonnets, and possibly the doors too!!) had better be in good shape or the work will just multiply.
The floor I plan to replace completely as it has too many repair patches and there are rusted bits too.I had seen an expert VW denter do this a while back so I plan to go to him for an estimate when I start with the project. Oh this would be WHEN I start the project!!
Brake work I had already done, all parts were repaired/replaced as needed and everything was checked. I put all the parts in storage as brake parts just rust and seize on the car. So its a simple matter of fitting everything back and then adding brake fluid and bleeding. This could be done in a days work if Im up to it.
The engine, a late sixties 1300 unit had already been taken down and then partially overhauled. The engine case with the crank/cam etc (what we call the 'shortblock' in VW slang) were all ok. Even the piston rings did not need replacement! However the Cylinder heads had to have new valves put in.
The engine was put back together and all the shrouding metal work was powdercoated dull black for a factory fresh look. The complete engine minus the carburettor (which is carefully placed in a cupboard!) was stored *inside* my house so that it does not get damaged or anything. So its just a matter of installing the engine and then firing the beast up!
Interior wise, I have to locate the correct font seats which I figure would not be hard and..... lets see......I have an excellent upholsterey man who can do the work as I want. So I am not worried about that aspect.
I do have to locate the original sunroof handle. Roof mechanism is otherwise complete. The material I would prefer would be vinyl for ease of maintenance.
Paint would come last so I dont even have a color in mind!! Lets see I would prefer one from VWs 1950 range.
All these plans.......dont know when I would be back in Pakistan to start the work........
Regards,
Asad
