    Default Aluminum weld on rim

Yesterday I bought 4 rims. seller kept on telling all rims are same and showed me one rim. I insisted I want to see all rims. eventually after half hour rims came and he offered me tea and sit here. ok. shop guys mount tires , balance and fit. today I find weld on one wheel with putine on it. this tire guy is right in front of Eurotech BMW on walton. Amir : 03444048667. I don't want to go argue to give money back . I drive as is. hopfully it should be ok . wheel is on back. Point is if buyer insists he wants to see all , and was told all rims are ok, why there is repair on one rim?. is this fraud or business?

You must always insist on seeing the item before buying, otherwise don't buy. Now best to get rid of them (maybe through same guy) and exchange them with rims which are in original condition. Repaired rims are a safety hazard. Keep away from them.

I would disagree. The rim is not safe to drive on. The repair is near the edge, which gives support to the tyre bead, and the welding is highly likely to be substandard and will fail in some time.

Q: Why is aluminum alloy 7075 not listed in AWS D1.2, Structural Welding Code - Aluminum?

A: Most aluminum alloys are weldable, but a fair number of them are not, including 7075 aluminum. When designers and welders look for an aluminum alloy to use, many will start by reviewing a table that lists all of the aluminum alloys and their strengths. Alloy 7075 is often selected because it is one of the highest strength aluminum alloys. But, few of the higher strength aluminum alloys are weldable, especially those in the 7000 and 2000 series, and they should not be used.

The one exception to the rule of never using 7075 for welded applications is in the injection molding industry, which uses 7075 dies and will repair them with welding. However, 7075 should not be used for structural work.

When you need to design something of high-strength aluminum, look to a 5000 series high-magnesium alloy instead of a 2000 or 7000 series. The 5000 series alloys are weldable and will produce the best results.

Q: Why is my aluminum welded connection so much weaker than the base material?

A: In steel weldments, a welded connection can be made as strong as the base material, but this is typically not the case with aluminum. In almost all instances, the welded connection will be weaker than the base material.

To understand why this occurs, consider the two classifications of aluminum alloys: heat treatable and nonheat treatable. The latter category is hardened only by cold working, which causes physical changes in the metal. The more the alloy is cold worked, the stronger it gets. When you weld an alloy that has been cold worked, you locally anneal the material around the weld so it goes back to its zero-tempered (or annealed) condition and it becomes "soft." Therefore, the only time you can make a weld as strong as the base material with a nonheat-treatable alloy is when you start with zero-tempered material.

With heat-treatable aluminum alloys, the last heat treatment step heats the metal to approximately 400?F (200?C). When welding, the material around the weld (the heat-affected zone) becomes much hotter than 400?F so the material tends to lose some of its strength. Unless a postweld heat treatment is applied, the area around the weld will become significantly weaker than the rest of the aluminum - by as much as 30 to 40%. Post-weld heat treatment can restore this loss in strength if a heat-treatable aluminum is used.

Table 1 is a guide as to which series of aluminum alloys are heat treatable and which are not.

Table 1 - Guide to Heat-Treatable Aluminum Alloys
    Heat Treatable Nonheat Treatable
    2000 1000
    6000 3000
    7000 4000
    7001 5000

Go back ask him to return the rims, if he disagrees to return and he has some other set you like, replace with them. better take 3 4 huge friends with you standing around you when you talk to him.
Force him on the point that he said that all are in same 'condition'.

in wheels / tyres section we shall put up a topic how & what to check when buying used wheels / tyres.
@levin please go ahead make a thread & share youe 1st hand experience with cheaters

i don't have a picture but i got one rim repaired for my ford explorer 2010 in DXB, only after 2800 km run an extended family member did the RUB with pavement edge over the curve late at night, The tyre got flat & run over flat approx 6.75 cm of rim curved edge GONE - a new tyre & repair of rim by FORD costed me GooD AED 475. since it was visible brush & torn up tyre there was no warranty & new rim was 8 weeks away, FORD workshop offered repair with a warranty for 50,000 km for the rim - they marked rim from inside with their own repair code. car was sold 2012 april after 22000 kms on ODO to the same family member & he is using it

Thank you all. I consider this sale not correct from seller if one unit is not considered same as rest and sale being made without buyer's consent. We shall continue discussion on used wheels/rims on different thread in appropriate section. Here the point is, All 4 wheels should had been shown separately. Showing one and saying rest look same is not correct in case of used parts without warranty.

Next time you can take the rim to repair shop and ask them if it is repaired or not. or get it polished first.

If it is financially feasible(time is also money) do go to the guy and let him know about this. it may be he is also scammed by some one else and may end up replacement for his shops reputation. Dont assume sitting hoem that he is fraud untill his response to ur polite request make him fearce. Goodluck and pray Allah give barakah in ur processions.
