    Default 4x4 Decision Making

    Guys!!!

I'd like to ask for your help and guidance regarding my first 4x4 vehicle purchase. The usage of the jeep/SUV will be approx 90% daily office-home commuting of about 20 km altogether and occasional road trips to northern areas with light to medium offroading on those trips.

    I have shortlisted two vehicles

    1. Jeep Cherokee - 1994 or 1996 model (Petrol 4.0 Ltr)

    2. Toyota Surf 1993 or 1994 model (Diesel 2.4 Ltr)

Which SUV will suit me better as per my requirements. My heart says Cherokee while my mind says Surf. I think the consumption of both can be made more or less equal if Cherokee is fitted with CNG for dauly use and use Petrol for northern areas trips. A trusted mechanic friend of mine warns me emphatically against going for Cherokee due to non availabilty of parts. What do the SUV/4x4 gurus at Pakwheels say about this? Please guide on this as I want to make a quick decision on this.

    Thanking you all in advance.

Well I am not a fan of Surf as to me its not as comfortable as a car nor as strong as a 4x4. Also the room space is horrible. Anyway for a daily drive dont even think of getting a Cherokee. The Hilux Surf is far easier to maintain and each and every part is available as new and used. Rest its up to you.

I forgot to mention that 2L (2.4) is the worst engine made by Toyota.

I think Surf would be the better option
U can get Spare Parts very easily, even in Northern areas
    U can sell Surf anytime.
    Consumption is also good

Janj's Cherookee is one of the best i have ever seen in Pakistan

Dear bro Cherokee is a fuel eater and cng for a 4x4 (N)

Surf 1st generation is really a ugly car with ugly interior, weak enigne and only 5 seats.

My advice go for Prado 1993 model. It is in ur range and better shape better interior better engine more fuel efficiency and also 7 seats.

For the record, Toyota's worst is 2LT......the 2L motor( the one you mentioned... without the turbo) runs forever!!!

    @sojourn

Cherokee ....power being the added attraction, it's good value for money owing to it's poor resale.

Surf, except for the new generation( '03 onwards), has interior resembling something close to a coffin box!!!

Prado '93-4.....shaped like an ambulance...... the word 'oudated' is the politest comment I can manage!

But if Prado it is....'96 with the 1kz motor is the way to go. Despite all my UNFONDNESS for Toyotas, this one has my vote....power, looks, parts, price,.....all neatly packaged into one!

But hey, if you are planning to spend only around a mil, the 2800 Pajero is a good choice with decent power, looks, abundant spares and loads of accesories! Look for ones auctioned by diplomats in Isloo!

Sir I meant the Turbo version, sorry for not writing T as the topic poster already mentioned it.

Secondly, Maybe you own a Pajero doesnt mean that its the best in the world. I know its qualities as I kept 3 different models of it and still own one but it has problems too. Also the spare parts are not THAT easily availabe as of Hilux Surf. Let alone the reliability issues. But I agree the 96 version of Prado with KZ is a nice overall package but not worth the price sellers are asking these days for it. Anyway everyone has its own choices. Cheers

Not true about Second Generation Surf. I have a 1992 with V6 3000 cc petrol engine and its a fantastic car. Fully loaded with Ricaro original factory fitted seats, sun roof, auto, etc.

brother !! i have both of the SUVs...1993 redg 2006 surf with 2lt and a recently purcased 1995 redg 1999 cherokee sports... as far as surf and its 2lt eng. goes, its way too under powered and it gives 6-7 in a litre and u cannot think of using this suv as a 4X4......thats the reason i have got the engine changed with a 1kz ...........cherokee is a fine 4x4 it gives around 6-7 in a litre , more fun to drive ,off road performance is excellent ,most of the parts here in karachi are available ......i would say go for cherokee

How is the performance of the surf after the 1KZ upgrade, also did you go for the one with the intercooler or without. Partuclarly interested in offroad performance versus your cherokee.

Thank you all for your invaluable input. From the responses that I've got so far a re stacked up heavily against Surf w/ 2L and its versions. It seems that cherokee will be a better option considering the budget of PKR 1.0 Million. Let's see how my search for a 4x4 ends up. Feel free to provide any further advice.

honestly neither are very good options. the cherokee is great fun to drive and overall a great car but parts are a nightmare. a friend (yaheya) had a 4.0L in ISB and he got rid of it only because parts started to become an issue. afterall these are old cars.

the surf is a wonderful machine but VERY underpowered and (as mentioned above) the 2.4L in this model is a bit cr@p.

if you were in a country where Jeep parts were easily available i'd sugges the cherokee, but since you are in ISB i'd suggest the surf. if nothing else parts and mechanics are not in short supply.

remember one thing when it comes to surfs, spec and colour mean everything. get a bad one and you'll regret it forever.

Good luck and do take a look at the 2 surfs for sale by sajidd (PW member), the petrol one (V6) looks like an amazing machine.
