    Turn the wick up little by little. There are an infinite number of settings between sending a rod through the block and getting a nice shove in the back. You know what you're aimng for.


    As an aside, people forget that charge temperature plays a huge role in power production. Cooler air for the same boost pressure will generally make more power. More oxygen , more fuel can be burnt, and more energy can be obtained.

    The problem that you had was not boost pressure but peak cylinder pressure. You have to retard timing just a bit when running such a high boost. Unfortunately, without a direct measurement of cylinder pressure, it's a guessing game at best. Keep in mind that new diesels do run these types of pressures and even higher, without failing.


    As an example, here's a plot of cylinder pressure in bars for a 2 litre 4 cylinder common rail engine making 200 N-m torque (BDC to BDC during compression, injection and combustion):

    Next time first thing I'll do is to install an exhaust temperature gauge and cooler. Anyway thanks for the info.

    I have a LCII 95 with 1KZTE ETCS-i version swapped. Any tips on performance tuning on that???

    Thank you once again for some wise input.....already have played with that stick to raise the boost a bit.....the turbo has a stock top mounted intercooler.....a free flow exhaust was copied from one of my 5 dr japanese domestic jero( had a ralliart insatalled apparatus when it was imported).....and the motor itself being totally stock!!! It indeed is not the fastest in its class( especially when you are pitched up against the new EFI twin cam 4D56s, 4M40s, J20As, 2KDs) but does the trick, EVERYTIME....all the mods are worth considering when one has a technical hand, like yourself, around.....with the kind of local expertise available, I'd rather put my money on 'going basic' and finish the race!!!

    sajdd, thanks alot. Well I might go to Shuba bazar on sunday, have seen a very nice complete exhaust system (japanese original performance JASMA approved) especially designed and tuned for surf. When it gets into my hands ill take some pics and send it to you if incase you are interested. These guys dont know their original worth and might cost us way cheaper.

    Good going! I have to ask though, isn't the front of your vehicle a bit "exposed"? I'm heading over to the 4x4 section to see the results and pictures of the rally (if there are any, that is).

    Thanks!!! IRS??? All I know that it has a 3.5 V6 MIVEC motor (280 horses if my stats dont fail me) with independent rear suspension. The tranny is auto with a triptronic mode.

    Sorry, Independent Rear Suspension - which the 2nd Gen didn't have originally. And have you done any 0-60 times of your own? Or such tomfoolery doesn't interest you?

    Haha....it is 11 years old and has clocked 27K so far..... I intend keeping it the way it is!!! Has been gunned/redlined occasionally but never timed.....more of a collectors thing(only 2100 units made???) than a daily drive.
