    Default Help in 4x4 selection

    I have a budget of 10 Lacs and want to buy a nice clean Toyota Land Cruiser. Usage will be 90% city driving and 10% off-road usage. I have a few TLCs in mind but cant really decide on which one to buy. Need the expert advice from 4x4 owners/enthusiasts and off-roaders here.

    I have sorted out the following TLCs with my observations in brackets:

    1. TLC 70-series, FJ70 4.0L (Gas Guzzler, Uncomforatble for long or city driving)

    2. TLC 70-series, BJ70 3.0L/3.2L/3.4L (Uncomfortable for long and city driving)

    3. TLC Prado 2.4, 2-door or 4-door (Underpowered, Not a good off-roader)

    4. TLC Prado 3.0, 2-door or 4-door. (Not a good off-roader)

    5. TLC 60/62-series, HJ62 4.0L, 4-door (Huge size, Maintenace costs, Resale tough)

    Also advise if I should get a manual or an auto transmission
    ?

    Other options besides a TLC are also welcome
    .

    Regards,

    Danyal.

    Cant agree with you on point # 3. The 3 door 3.0 liter Prado, 1992-1994/5 is a fantastic off roader.

    @Ace
    Brother, don't take offense, but I don't feel you know too much about LCs. Who told you the 2.4 and 3.0 Prados are poor offroaders? I have a friend who has a 2.4 diesel LC and he hangs out with our 4x4 Engaged gang and has no issues keeping up with some "true" offroaders. Trust me, our definition of offroading is very very literal.

    You are right about the 70 series, but they are mean off the road. They do what they were meant for very well. And so do the 40 series.

    In my opinion, if I were you, since you want to drive the vehicle more in the city than off the road, I would look for a SX Turbo LC, or what you are calling a 3.0 Prado 3 door. But trust me brother, you will be offroading more and more as soon as you get a machine like the ones you have mentioned, in short, you can't go wrong with either one.

    I will miss her, that RKR. She will always be the one that got away.
    But, life goes on. From RKR to MMC. 4x4 Engaged? Team Unimog, Pakistan

    Thankyou for your valuable input sir. I have corrected my notes and ticked Prado as a good off-roader. Maybe I'll get one too.

    But the truth of the matter is that, I realy would like to get my hands on a FJ70 or BJ70 and modify it into a beast. Any idea how much the initial vehicle will cost and how much the mods will cost? Are all the mods available in Pakistan?`(e.g. adjustable shocks, snorkel, lift kit etc)

    @Ace, a fine SX 3.0 Prado, 3-Door will cost u around 800K-900K. Toyota Shaheen on jail road hav one for sale. According to them its a 96 model with 2.8L engine (i wonder which engine is tht?) its zero-meter n those lunatics r asking 2700K for it.
    About the modifications u r asking for, they r easily available in Pakistan now since ARB has opened in Pakistan

    @Saaduk

    As stated earlier, my budget is 10 Lacs. Everything included.

    @ devilz_apprentice

    Toyota Shaheen guys must be out of their minds demanding 27 Lacs for a 96 Prado. The 2.8 engine they are saying it has is the 3L engine (2776cc) offered in Prado from 1996-1999. Ita 4 cylinder non-turbo diesel engine.

    Whats ARB? (Excuse my lack of knwledge)

    Never mind. I did a little research over the net and found ARB. They dont have Pakistan listed in their dealer network list. The only thread related to ARB here has been closed by Mods. Its blank now. I seriously doubt that theres an official ARB dealership in Pakistan.

    Also do not discount a 92-94 model Surf, that is if you can find one fitted with 1kz engine. Those are pretty good as well, both for off roading and city driving.
    I have owned both 96 and 92.. and found them durable, reliable and capable.

    But the grand daddy of all off roaders in my humble opinon is the 80 series Land Cruiser. Even till now some 96 Model VX Multi valve in outstanding conditions are being sold for s much as 20 lakh !

    ARB.. do a little google on it..

    13BT /14BT/15BT are all 4-cylinder engines and are very noisy? Why dont you put a 1HD or 2H in your BJ74? They are 6-cylinder engines and run much smoother noise wise. Also they have more horses and torque than the BTs.

    Bro I have already one FJ80 with 1HDT but the reason for fitting a B series is because its a bolt on fit. Secondly I have aftermarket exhaust so it balances with engine sound equally. also the 1HDFT (Black top) costs around 6 lacs here
