Default Fitting a turbo on 3B engine

    Guys,

Have searched the net and concluded that it is possible to install a turbo on a 3B engine.

I would like to know if that would be any good? What performance improvements will it bring and the side effects too.

Plus, was hoping if anyone would know where to obtain the turbo kit from, and the estimated cost.

Thanks in advance for any comments

    Brother,

Its no use puting a Turbo on a 3B. Instead swap it with a 13B-T which is the Turbo version of 3B. (basicaly they instaled a turbo on a 3B and renamed it 13B-T)

Agreed, go for the 13B-T instead. That's a good engine. I have heard of people successfully placing a turbo on a 3L engine in Pakistan. Sorry, can't help you with prices, but beware, prices are more these days because of the turmoil in the northern areas.

There are two types of 13BTs available in the market. From effeciency point of view, both r equal. One is the older one which has got sleeves like a std 3B. The other does not have sleeves, resulting in less noise than the simple one. The one with sleeves will cost you around 1,50 to 1,55 and the other one would be within 2 lacs.

I understand that its a relatively simple operation to latch on a turbo onto the 2B or 3B engines and should cost around 6-10K depending on which turbo. Have never seen one but know that it is doable..

Upside: There should be a significant improvement in performance and possibly fuel efficiency as well. The AXT turbo website gives you dyno charts claiming that their 3B turbo would outperform a 13B-T http://www.axtturbo.com.au/toy3B.html

Downside: I am told that the life of the engine would be compromised as the standard pistons are not really configured to take the additional load. Also understand once installed, it is difficult to take the turbo off and will cost you more. Also I would think that that you would have to be very careful with temperature issues as you may overheat your engine if things are not working 100%.

Alt Views: There are a gazillion stories of people slapping on turbos on petrol and diesel engines which seem to run well... though this is not so popular in Pakistan....Note: AXT which is a credible Australian company sell a host of custom TurboKits for standard diesel engines of all makes. These kits sell north of US$2,000 and are quite popular it seems. See website: http://www.axtturbo.com.au/Turbos.html.

My Bottomline: I would not replace 3B with a 13BT but rather go all out for a 1HZ or 1HD... If i was in the mood for a panga project I would take the risk of installing the turbo as long as I could afford replacing/upgrading the engine if things go wrong....if my pocket was not deep enough and i was the age that I am now, I would sit back and enjoy the 2B/3B....its a great engine for what it is!!

Hope that helps...but if you still have an itch do speak to Master Mechanic Farooq Awan who has some experience in this territory. His number is 0333-5207251.

Oh man! that lexus engine would be mean! But.... can you find it in Pakistan? Also, I like you already, for recommending a petrol engine, but not sure how much the offroaders will appreciate it! I get it all the time from them for having a 3F.

Bloody hell! What about a 1HZ, perfect offroad engine I feel. There are people who put on turbos on those all the time.

Lol @ Shahid bhai, sir aap toh sha sey shaayiree karnay lagay. Mahl-o-vuqu ki munaasibat se khoob farmaya.

@ Suhaib Kiani, Gratitude for the detailed response mate, much appreciated . Considering the prices of better engines, and the fact that my 3B has never let me down so far in the 9 years of my ownership of this vehicle, i guess i will stick to it afterall. Plannning to give it a overhaul in the near future insha Allah.

Me and Farooq got into doing just this for my Cherokee a few years back. We sourced a spare manifold and retrofitted a Garrett Turbo onto it. It was just a tuck welded experiment. I have a few pictures somewhere but I will have to look for them. We could not get to finishing the project and installing it into the engine. So it is doable? Yes it is. But doing it good is a question mark. There are a lot of issues involved here and not just welding a turbo onto a manifold. I am sure Farooq would come onto this thread soon to ellaborate.

Also.. There is a rare turbo fitted 3B model as well. Either that or the one I know installed into a BJ40 was aftermarket (if it was, it was done clean). The vehicle is owned by Mohsin who is an IJC member and frequents this forum off and on. I hear it is a significant improvement over the regular 3B. The installation was, again done by Farooq.

    Thanks

    Ehsan
