    Default BABA's Corner

Miskeen Baba was an excellent off-roader. He died some time ago. Before his death, he planted off-roading firmly in a number of his friends, his son, nephews, and followers. This thread is dedicated to his memory. I would like my friends to visit this thread, use it for off-road discussions and by doing so, pay homage to him. (May Allah rest his soul in peace, Ameen).

    Default Baba

Baba was a very talented mechanic. He started his career as a mechanic at Karachi (1971), and later shifted to Abbottabad, his native village ('87). In good old days, when he was in Karachi, he was a thoroughly handsome, extremely strong young man, with long, hair and beard. Shortly we will upload some of his long-forgotten pictures. He dared to go alone, and unaided, into the wild wild West: NWFP, and Balochistan, on off-roading trips, much before the current hype of off-roading internationally.

In the late 80's, he was the first, that I know of, who swapped an engine in a Dozer (probably because of the clutch mechanism & multiple hydraulic systems).

I was fortunate to have sat with him on numerous occasions, discussing the pros & cons of various off-roading vehicles, and techniques. Once, when I was young, I skidded on snow, and hit another vehicle. Baba bull-shitted me thoroughly, and then demonstrated the exact technique for controlling skid on ice. I had the green Nissan then (pc above).

In good old days, once, I visited Nathiagali in something like 2 + feet of snow on the road (much bigger heaps on the sides). And Baba came in his Austin, the same as you see on Pakwheels. When he saw the tracks, he told Irshad (Veitnam) that this must be that crazy doctor with half a brain. And sure enough it was me, with some friends, sitting in Nathiagali, around a fire and trying to Bar B Q some meat.

    More next time, Insha Allah

I am 13 and can offroad real good as taught by my dad. I am not allowed to drive on road till I am 18 so I love my offroad world. Whenever I am in village I drive for hours in my CJ7 into the fields and get it refilled from the tractor diesel lying in the drums.
In ma village offroad starts frm ma porch!

Dear Storm, thanks for your interest and reply. I was referring to your third quote: "Genius has limits: Stupidity has none". This is interesting, I mean really intriguing. The more I think about it, the more I become addicted to it. I hope you don't mind, but I am tremendously interested in using it sometimes in future. Could you, therefore, guide me as to who first said it or wrote it or something like that?
    thanks

    Default BABA's Old Pics

Dear Friends, Baba was an extremely handsome young man. The one in the driving seat of the jeep. This is a picture from a time, when Off-Roading was no-where to be seen in Pakistan. Even the west was beginning to capitalize on the idea. Areas, as remote as the wild, wild west of Balochistan, were his usual play grounds. In one of the pics, he is holding Irshad Miskeen, who, now is one of the best off-roaders I have seen. Please wish him luck.
    More next time !

    Default BABA's CONCEPTS

One of the most important concepts that the Baba propagated was "Vehicles are built around Angles". Considering myself a very competent, and highly educated, enlightened person, I could not grasp the subject in the beginning. I actually made a fool of myself.
Once I bought a 6-cylinder, HJ 60, Land Cruiser, and Baba dismissed it straight away, saying "its angle is not right". Now, with 20 years of Off-Roading, and considering myself a learner, I believe he was right.

Please think deeply. The approach, departure and ramp angles are well known. The Camber and Caster angles make a difference. What is less well known is the Visibility angles, at the front, and back and the corners, the placement of reversing mirrors, the angle at which the driver sits, relating to the bonnet level, and the angles at which the shafts operate, the angle at which the engine is set, etc., etc. In fact, all the vehicle is built around certain angles, and although I do not comprehend it completely, I understand that this is the most crucial consideration.
I agree with Baba, that vehicles are built around angles. Good and Safe Off-Roading require a well-built vehicle, and depends much less on the door trims, the chrome, alloy-wheels, engine displacement, etc. Leather interior in true off-roading, eg becomes a liability, rather than an asset!

    More.. next time, Insha Allah............................
