Default Advice on restoring Toyota FJ40

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of restoring an army auctioned FJ40. I have rebuilt the original F series petrol engine and 3 speed gear box. Axles, brakes, and clutch have also been rebuilt. Body sheet metal has been preped for paint to my satisfaction. In a week or so it will be painted (Insh'Allah) with Standox 2k "baked paint".

However, wiring, suspension, and final touches and refinement can only be done by a proper "Jeep ka mechanic". I may also need help in converting to power steering as I plan on running extra wide tires (15 inch rims with 10inch width). I plan on lifting the vehicle 3 to 4 inches. Can someone suggest a workshop or mechanic in Lahore that can help me complete the task.

    Experts out there...kindly help.

    Regards,

    Salman Chaudhry (03009422749)

Very nice project! Do post some pics when you can as it would help in grasping the full picture.

For the fine tuning of the engine and body lift, your best bet would be to have that done in Rawalpindi as there are a number of LC40 and 2F specialists still around. Also best practices and best-fit-jugaar parts in LC40 restorations are quite well established after over 30 years of experience. I believe Raza's excellent black FJ40 was done up here and RKR and his 3F are also feeling much better about their future together after the move

In fine tuning the engine, a fair bit of attention may be required depending on the state of things. But probably the trickiest part is getting the carb settings optimized, which owing to the age of the parts at times even gives the gurus a fair headache. For the three inch lift you need the right shackles/bushings etc. and obviously good shocks and decent leafs... probably manageable in Lahore but would recommend to get basics restoration done there and the lifting in Rawalpindi with shocks sourced from Kashmir Autos Karachi. I would have thought that wiring should be doable at any decent electrician, in Lahore provided you can get all the parts (the distributer cap is only half tricky thing that comes to mind, otherwise it is a pretty simple set-up with no gimmicks).

One more thing, I am not a fan of the three speed gearbox on the 2F and this should ideally be replaced with a 4 or 5 speed one to really let the monster engine loose! Anyways just some loud thinking from my end, I am sure you will have plenty of help out here. All the best!

thanks subhan and dee dee. Just a little more clarification. My FJ is 1967 model therefore it has an F engine which was the earlier version of the toyota 2F. The pistons have 4 rings instead of the 3 rings on the 2F. F is 3.Liter where as the 2F is 4.2 liter engine. I would love to attach the 4 speed from the later 2F engine....can some body clarify if the 4 speed will bolt on to the old F engine...or will i have to modify it. If alternations is required then I would opt for a 5speed...but which 5speed do I ask for in Bilal Ganj?

I will take pictures tomorrow and post em up..so you guys can see the current status of the FJ40 painful project.

Yup, janj would be the best person for this as he is doing my bj70 right now and his attention to detail is just superb. All the best.

Both you and Asad have pointed me towards Janj...so I definatley will contact him. As per your recommendations he is the man to add the final touches and refinement in the mechanical work I am after. As you can see body work has come a long way..... Once the engine is started the FJ will drive into the paint booth for the 2k paint job. Suspension and complete wiring will be done after the paint job.

    !
Thanks for detailed feedback and encouragement. As for 3 to 4inch lift...buddy I also explored the ARB Suspension kit route...but discovered that the kit was far beyond my budget for this project. American FJ40 kits are much cheaper and some are even on sale for a fraction of the price...but again I did not want to get into the hassle of importing and then having to deal with the customs department. Local solution may be the best option for this old FJ40. Perhaps those expensive kits make more sense on newer Land Cruisers and Vigos. This is just my 2cents on subject.

Boss, Lots of work, but here is how I think you can minimize your khwari.
    1. Speak to Janj Ustad on how best to get the mechanicals sorted in Lahore. Should not be too complicated but you need expert hands.
    2. Aamir Bhai is your man for all the parts. Probably need a good few but good news is that everything FJ40 is available down here.... and more !
    3. Doc Ehsan can fix you with the soft top.

And the 4 and 5 speeds should be a rather simple fit. All the best.

We were able to start the engine on Saturday. The engine start up revealed the carb needs an overhaul kit and water pump needs to be replaced. I will have these two things completed tomorrow after which the FJ40 will go into the paint booth. Pics will be posted soon after the paint job.

@salmanchaudhry what you have is more than an ordinary FJ40, having a 1967 in original engine and gear is a treat. If you keep it in original specs it will be a very rear vehicle running around.
