Default Advice on restoring Toyota FJ40

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of restoring an army auctioned FJ40. I have rebuilt the original F series petrol engine and 3 speed gear box. Axles, brakes, and clutch have also been rebuilt. Body sheet metal has been preped for paint to my satisfaction. In a week or so it will be painted (Insh'Allah) with Standox 2k "baked paint".

However, wiring, suspension, and final touches and refinement can only be done by a proper "Jeep ka mechanic". I may also need help in converting to power steering as I plan on running extra wide tires (15 inch rims with 10inch width). I plan on lifting the vehicle 3 to 4 inches. Can someone suggest a workshop or mechanic in Lahore that can help me complete the task.

    Experts out there...kindly help.

    Regards,

    Salman Chaudhry (03009422749)

    Default FJ40 Restore

    Dear All,

I am also on same track as salmanchaudhry FJ40 Restore, I have gone through the entire posts but could not find the right answer for Engine swap i.e 2F vs ???.
Could someone put some light of engine swap, I feel 14BT is most suitable engine, please advise for possible engine swaps.

    JazzakAllah.

    Regards,

    Abdul Rauf.

Rauf with the price of Diesel these days a petrol EFI engine should also be on your shopping list as an option.

My opinion is that if you are not keeping the old 2F engine then for brand new technology. clean, reliable and efficient 3.0 toyota crown engine isnt a bad option. Perhaps you can keep the original gear (if it is a 4 speed). If it is Diesel that you fancy than go for the latest diesel engine in superb shape...intial extra investment on like-new engine will save a lot of head ache later on in the project. 3B and 13BT are not available in good condition anymore. Only go for the 14BT if it is in spic and span condition.

i was busy so I stopped working on the FJ40 project for a while. I took her out this saturday but as soon I pulled into the house the throttle cable broke. Last month it was the clutch cylinder that gave out. Little gremlins/ issues keep poping up....which are really annoying as my vehicle isnt reliable yet . So frustrating.... reliability is so important...as you guys know...sadly I havent been able to achieve it yet on this machine.

Based on my experience do not spend time and money on rebuilding 3 speeds tranny. Swap it with 4 speed original Toyota FJ60 or FJ80. 2F will be much more to enjoy with 4 speed transmission.

If I was going to go through restore process all over again, I would do two things.

    1) Without spending a dime on 2F, I would swap it with 1KZ or 13BT, 3B.
A carburetor engine technology (2F) is 30 years old and no need to rebuild. Just swap it you will be much happier in the end.

    2) 5 Speed must be mated with diesel engine of your choice, along with tubes (Bell housing) followed by Power Steering, disc brakes to avoid redundancy.

    Regards,
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

If you are swapping with Diesel 3B and 13B only do you think it is necessary to change diff tubes. Please advice.

    @abdulr76
Original diff will work fine with 3B or 13B but if you intend to put 1KZ do change the diffs/tubes - it will give you more pick-up and top speed.
