    Default Mystery Radiator Coolant – Pajero 2.8

    On my trip to Naran, just half way up while going to Saif-ul-Maluk my Pajero heated up. We stopped near the Glacier and filled the Radiator with Glacier water.
    After filling it with Glacier water the temperature needle never went above 45%, few days back I filled it with Tap water and the Temp needle is back at 50%

    Can anyone solve this mystery?

    Heating problem was due to radiator blocked with insects and a broken fan shroud

    rain water isn't distilled, and infact is usually quite acidic. best place to find distilled water is the frost in your freezer.

    <!-- message --> Nothing magical about glacier water.

    Your car overheated because water level was low in radiator. When you topped it up. It didn't overheat. The reason the temp stayed below 50% is probably because you have removed the thermostat valve or it has stopped working. Thus water flows freely through radiator and because temperature in Naran is much more colder, the air coming through the radiator fins, was enough to keep the temp below 50%.

    When you came back from Naran, obviously the temp was much higher, hence the air coming through the radiator was not so cold, hence the temp goes up to 50% after which the automatic fan kicks in and keeps the temp at 50%. So my conclusion is that you need a new thermostat valve.

    Some time back, a similar problem happened with my Civic. In winter season on the highway, the temperature would drop below 50%. Reason was that the thermostat valve would not close, hence water was flowing freely through the radiator and the cold air would keep the temp below 50%. But in city driving, the temp stayed at 50% all the time. I replaced the valve and problem solved. Temp stays at 50% all the time

    The cooler air part is plausible.
    The only other reason i can think of is that the hardness of water varies. Probably calcification on the temp gauge threw your reading off by a couple of degrees or the lower barometric pressure, the pressure cooker theory

    Once again this is what happened, in detail.

    On 2nd Sept 2009 4:35PM i filled my Pajero's Radiator with Glaciar water half way to Lake Saif-ul-Maluk, the temperature needle came at 45%, before water change it was always at 50%. On 17th Jan 2010 5:30PM i drained the Glacier water filled it with Tap water the temperature went back to 50%.

    From 2nd Sept 2009 to 17th Jan 2010 (more then 4 months) in this period i travelled from Naran to Karachi and Karachi to Murree/Galiat/Abbotabad and back to Karachi, did some small road trips in Sindh, city driving, temperature did not go above 45%
    Just after changing the water On 17th Jan 2010 5:30PM it went back to 50% and still is.

    @Fli
    What i think is Glacier water does not contain Rust/zinc particles and tap water contains everything you can imagine of.

    Rust/zinc particles in Tap water rises the temperature by 5%
