Default Noobie on 4x4...HELP from the gurus :)

    Hey all,

I am a noobie on the 4x4 area so please be gentle . Basically I am looking for a 4x4 purely for mountaineering purpose, like khunjrab, skardu, deosai, saifalmaluk, lalazar, chilas etc etc (no cholistan desert rally type stuff). And not just in the summers, but also in the winters as far as I can push it.

I have been going on and about on this forum for the types of 4x4 available and from what it seems here are the possible choices:-

    1) CJ 5 or 7 or weely jeeps etc
    2) Mini Pajero
    3) Jimny
    4) Terois Kid
    5) Potohar :p

The landcruisers and pajeros are out of the question due to financial reasons :p. My budget, simply is about 3 lac, can push it to 4, 4.5 if the machine is worth it. To be honest I love the CJ-7 looks, and it really looks like a mean machine, the mini pajero seems to ummm delicate.

Can you guys help me here.

    1) Basically for the above mentioned places, which of these babies will be the best ride? I am not at all looking for comfort (ofcourse it shouldnt be like a "tangaaa ride" or a "BMW ride", just something decent). Also I live in Lahore so I would still need to have that 4-5 hr drive to Isb to take, so the ride shouldnt be a pain in the rear :p haha.

    2) How much do these rides do in terms of fuel consumption. I heard mini pajero gives only like 6-7 km / ltr (is that true, some say CNG is not an option as its just too a smaller engine). What about the CJ's, on a normal 2.4 diesal engine, how many kms would that give me on a liter?

    3) WHERE CAN I GET ONE, esp the CJ5 or 7, I am not looking for too much work (like engine swap or work etc). It doesnt really need to be flashy, i just dont want the hassle for any engine work..and how much would a decent one cost?

    Many thanks

    xeshu

    @xeshu

Sir, if you are really 80 years old (as per your ID on PW), I suggest you should plan for 'HAJJ'....that is most recommended for people this age. If you are NOT foolin' around with PWheelers, I suggest you type your correct age and wait for a beneficial reply from fellow members!

I would suggest M151 A2 with a toyota 2C or 3C engine, if you are into heavy duty off roading. If you are gonna use your 4x4 as a second car then go for a mini pajero as it has all the creature comforts of a car in a light duty 4x4 that incredibily affordable. Many people do not realize what a great value for money the mini pajero is.

Cheers Salman for the reply. For the M151 A2 or the CJ series, any clues as to where do i go looking for one? I have heard their an auction some where in Rawalpindi where these jeeps are auctioned...does any one know the place?

Regarding the mini, I am uncertain about the fuel consumption and the power. To be honest the mini does'nt look very rigid or have that bulky look. But hey if it can take me to places like babusar pass, deaosai, gilgit and beyond etc, then thats pretty cool.

How about Dihatsu Rocky? From my findings through pakwheels, rocky seems to lead them all when it comes to offroading (though according to wikipedia, rocky is a mini-SUV? How is the fuel consumption on a 2800CC desial engine and how is the ride like within city?

just go down to thokar niaz baig and turn on to multan road going towards yateem khana and you will see a few jeeps/ trucks including auctioned m151 (mutt). asking price for the mutts are 120,000 but you should be able to bring the price down.

I agree with Sajid, its comfortable, economical and if not within, just around the price limit. Put decent all terriain rubber and you would be fine. If you want to do mountains in winters, invest on snow chains and learn to put them on before reaching the snow covered area. Steel chains are difficult to wrap around the wheem when ones fingers are near frost bite

Jimny is certainly out cuz even a 660 cc will cost over 600K. Mini Pajero with 205/70/15 rubber will befine but you wont be able to push it on motorway, may be average speed of 100 is attainable. Availability of parts will certainly be an issue with Jimny, Mini Pajero and Terrios.

Pothohar is also a very good choice if you can compromise on comfort.

So, my suggestion is 86-90 2400 cc Pajero or Pothohar, whether with 1000cc engine or 1300cc.

yes 3 door pajero is a good option, price would be somewhere between 4 to 5.5 lac depending on the condition.

Potohar is good u can put 1300 cc engine into it and it flies. not sure about the price range.

mini pajero is a decent offroader , u can even put 215/75/15 in it , but for long travels its not recommended.

dont go for modified suvs at the moment , stick to stock

    i hope it helps
