Default TLC FJ40 without F.D Knob

    Salam Bros,

I am a newbie to 4x4 and recently acquired army auctioned TLC FJ40, model 198x (assumed to be 83 due to rectangle headlight frame, papers not received yet). I am surprised to see that, there is no F.D (Front Drive) Knob or switch on the Dash and there is no indication light which shows 4x4 engagement.

Vehicle is in working/running condition and I am able to engage 2H, 4H, N and 2L with the small lever. (Off-Road not test not yet performed)

I will highly appreciate, if someone could help and provide me guidance on the matter. OR. suggest a good mechanic in Karachi.

    JazzakAllah.

    Regards,
    Abdul Rauf.

Sir, if you are refering the dash mounted 4x4 engagement electronic switches found in FJ70s then that you will not find in this FJ40. Its a military spec vehicle, you just lock your hubs manually and engage the 4x4 lever to your desired ratio.

You can however go for an alteration to FJ70 self locking hubs etc etc by the touch of a button.

Is that what you have refered to & desire to have ?

TLC u r talking about does not have 4x4 engaged indicator lights on the dash and electronics hub locks are also not available in these stock models. Wat u get is manual hub locks on the front wheels which u have to engage manually and than use the lever for 4 wheel drive gear ratio.

I also have a TLC FJ-40 1981 (Mily specs) converted to BJ-40 with original dash. It has manual diff locks and FD switch with indication light. I believe the switch must be missing.

Wow, Bundle of thanks for posts.
Well, could someone tell me how to manually lock the HUBs as I have checked the front HUBS there is no Clock or Counter Clock wise locking mechanism or arrows. I have seen Hub locking on Toyota 4Runner but on my TLC FJ40 no sign.

Moreover, the attached pic by Cateyez of TLC FJ40 has the knob as mentioned on the left Dash Cover and during my visits to army actions I have seen few FJs with the F.D Knob instructions.

Also, please let me know if someone has changed the front axle with Disc Brakes and if YES what are the possible matches for replacement.
    Waiting for reply.....

Bossman, post some pics of your front hubs.

Do they look something like this ?

Yes, disc brakes are possible and don't need much looking around, check out any landcruiser ones.

To my last statement, all Military spec FJs and even in most of the later model RKRs, the hubs came locked. All you need to do is engage 4x4 from the lever.

The only drawback it has is the turning radius of the vehicle reduces, with the hubs constantly locked.

The older model FJ's dont have front free hub locks as they are all time engaged. But its better u get them changed to the later model free hub like shown in the picture posted by sarmad sahab. I have installed disc on my front axles, will cost u around 10 grand for this or u might buy one with stock disc if u have to change ur tubes and axles. Which normally is the case. Bought a 82 bj but it had tubes of 76 so changed both front and rear with 82 model ones.As the later one has the handbrake brackets.

    Hi TLCFJ40,

Thanks for reply, you are right, I have checked with a jeep mechanic, he said the same.
Moreover, my FJ40 is completely stock without modification, therefore, I want to do the following, please advise..........

    1. Front Disc (already answered by TLCFJ40) more suggestions are welcome )
    2. Power Steering
    3. Engine swap for fuel economy with less maintenance

Current Stock Engine is petrol 4.2L 6 cylinder 2F which is hitting my pocket a lot and CNG conversion will not make a much difference, therefore, I am planning to swap engine with a diesel w/gearbox and as suggested I should consider Toyota 2B, B2, 1HZ, or (1KZ-non turbo) all with complete gearbox.

    Please advise...............

Power steering is no problem. You will be needing a power pump and power pipes - power pipe bends as per original set-up.

Conversion to BJ-40 will cost you at-least 2+ lacs. Engine, gearbox, foundation, alteration, modification, setting cost etc.

B series engines are very powerful yet simple while 1KZ-TE deliver equal if not less torque but are quite complicated with lot of sensors.

Drive less - Keep it stock.

    Hi brother
Well will try to help u out here. Building a TLC is not as easy as it seems, if u want to enjoy it u need to build it correctly so there is no hassle after wards and u can enjoy it to the max. You might have many options when it comes to putting this in or putting that in but a very few will be the right options which will give u no headaches afterward. First of all u need to ask ur self what u need it for? After u have figured that part out go accordingly. Remember the closest u keep ur self to stock parts the easier ur life is gonna be.
Why don't u check my members ride page it has loads of pictures and details in the comment area.
In my opinion if u want to travel with a bit off off-roading u should go for Surf set up (1kz non turbo, surf tubes /axles and suspension). That way u will have a bit of comfortable ride and plenty of REV at ur service.

If u want to play hardcore like i do the only option u have is B2 or B13 with 5 forward gear box, with stock tubes and axles with 4 wheel disc all around. 5 leaf setup (kamani).
As far as the power steering is concerned go for a original toyota pump with original brackets which connect to the ur engine, nothing can beat that set up. U can also get a hiace or a coaster set up but i would recommend u the toyota original setup.
Other than that add a big radiator with 7 leaf fan.
Do put namda in the engine bay both sides and underneath the bonnet.
If you want to put in a hardcore setup like B2 with a 5 forward gear box let me know might have a deal for u .
    Regards

    Salam Brothers,

Once again thanks everyone for posting replies. Well, finally myself and my friends (Jeep edict) came to conclusion on NOT to change/swap the 2F engine and shall install a CNG Kit with 2 cylinders if applicable.

Vehicle Registration is costing too much approx Rs. 50,000/-. Rest of the jobs shall be performed as per TLCJF40 suggestion but in slow pace.

Now, I need another favor from you guys i.e. Change of carburetor for reasonable mileage on Petrol. Could some please suggest any possible carburetor swap for 2F.

I am thinking to install a smaller Jet in carburetor, it may be work or may be not.

    Please advise..

    Waiting for reply...........

    JazzakAllah.

    Default hi

Well bro u have two options..
if u don't need the front wheel option all u got to do is get the front shaft out. If u plan to use the front wheels once in a while just get manual hub locks from any kabaria in city saddar and get them changed. That way u can lock the front shaft when ever u want and release them if u dont need ur 4x4.
They look something like, wat is shown above in the thread.(White hilux pic).

TCLFJ40 your cost breakdown is excellent.
In my case, I just added $650.00 of telephone calls to stay on top of project

    Dear All,

Finally, Hub Cups Installed and drive is much lighter. It cost me Rs. 2,500.00 and looking good. Moreover, I looked for front disc conversion but price is extremely high (for Vented Disc) Rs. 14,000.00 OR Hilux Single disc Rs. 12,000.00 without Hub Free Cups, therefore, I postponed the conversion till next front Hub repair.

Carburetor issue exist need some assistance in carb swap..........
I am thinking to take a look at Toyota 3Y Carb please advise.........
