Though I have never had first hand experience of the 13B or 13BT, I believe these are good engines which continue the rugged and solid tradition of the Toyota B series diesels. I have heard that you need to be somewhat careful with the diesel pump on these models. Probably because of the direct injection, but apparently if something goes a-miss in the pump its difficult to get it back to 100% again and you have to replace the whole pump which is a PKR 30k remedy.

Performance wise, on paper the 13BT:
    Power: 120 hp (89 kW) at 3400 rpmTorque : 207 ft·lbf (284 N·m) at 2200 rpm

.....should perform almost at par with the 1KZTE:
    Power: 130 hp (97 kW) @ 3600 rpmTorque : 29.3 kgf·m (287 N·m) @ 2000 rpm

Practically speaking, the two engines probably drive, feel, and sound entirely different. The 13BT would however be much more fuel efficient than a converted 1KZTE.

The price of a good 13BT was around 150K in the market from what I remember last.

The 1KZ engine is a joke infont of 13BT, personal experience. On paper the 1KZ might look better but it is a gutless engine.

I have done some experiments with the 13BT and its seriously fast now, kicks my 1KZTE prado's A$$ like anything right from the launch.

It is built very well and not like a budget 1KZ engine, this means you can raise the boost and fuel safely and no head crack issues like the 1kz even after 3.50 lac kms on the counter!

    13BTs advantages over 1KZ

    1. Better built, Iron block
    2. Far better economy
    3. Direct injection
    4. No pre heat required
    5. Comes with CT26 which has alot of potential
    6. No head crack issues

    Disadvantages
    1. Noisy engine
    2. Bigger turbo so it makes proper torque above 2000 rpm
    3. No top-end

That depends upon your requirements, If you want performance then nothing can outperform turbo. But I dont recommend it unless you can get all the necessary parts dirt cheap. Also it might require hell lot of work. Better will be to replace it with 13BT if possible

Thanks for the insights! Good post! Didn't mean to turn this into a 1KZ vs 13BT discussion but thought that the 1KZ is a good reference point here.

Agree on superiority of 13BT which is essentially the B series engine with turbo and direct injection. All B series engines will get you to the moon and back while towing a tank and 16 passengers on board...

I have seen variations in 1KZ particularly converted 1KZs and my opinion on speed would be same had I not driven the black Wrangler done by Farooq Awan. Soft top with 1KZ-TE, 4.1 diffs, a prado auto gear box and rear disc brakes. I tried to test drive the car twice and essentially gave up both times as I felt the car was simply dangerously fast. Stock 1KZs Prados typically have a 4.3 ratio. I have driven other Wranglers and TLC 70s with 4.3 (or higher) diffs which are powerful but not exactly very fast.

The 13BT on the other hand (like other B series) typically runs on 4.1 diffs which probably contribute to its being faster in stock factory settings. Also as you mentioned with the ruggedness of the engine, you could can comfortably overload the turbo and pump settings with good returns.

All said in done, if I were to build a diesel wrangler or 40 series today (or for that matter any shortish wheelbase 4x4) I would put in a 13BT. Hitches would be the weight (I think its significantly heavier than the 1KZ), the cost (at least 50% more than 1KZ) and issues on parts availability (manageable but comparatively expensive). But then again why would I do another diesel 4x4 in this day and age?..... for the reliability perhaps!

I am not sure about Pindi or Peshawar market, but a good condition 13B or 13Bt is no longer available in Lahore market.
