Electric winches work off electric motors

mechanical winches are dirven by the engine power through Gear Box.. a PTO shaft runs off the gear box to drive the winch.. speed depends on engine rpms

there are also hydraulic winches that run off from hydraulic fluid just like power steering.. they are the slowest!
