    Default Nasser Al-Attiyah

Keeping the dream alive: Brother Nasser from Qatar running the VW Touareg. In 2010 Dakar, he finished second, 2'12 behind Carlos Sainz, the smallest gap in the history of the race. He also drove in a BMW with Swedish female co-driver Tina Thorner in the 2009 Dakar Rally in Argentina. He was among the frontrunners until he got disqualified on 8 January 2009 after he had missed 9 checkpoints, the rules stating that 4 missed checkpoints are the maximum.

Apparently, there was a serious duel between him and team mate Carlos Sainz at the last stage of Dakar 2010 and the guru was not too happy with the new kid overtaking him.

'Mithi' is like 4hrs(3 and a half if you are a fast driver and have a fast car) from Karachi. The rally is held in late october/november....very nice firm sandy track!!! My plans, very frankly, are grossly LIQUID at the moment ...... subject to a V24 deal which I plan to convert later to 4M40...... (desert devil had a look at the ol' jalopy when he was here last weekend)..... and thats the whole plan from the king of wishful thinking!!!

@Mitsuman: thanks for the update and best of luck for Mithi.

On another note, I read that the Mitsubishi team opted not to participate in the 2010 Dakar owing to financial issues. Hopefully we shall have them back soon as the Germans are having a field day out there with the VWs and BMWs. Nevertheless, there were 5 private Mitsubishi entries in 2010 which did decently well.

Also I understand that Team Mitsubishi retired the Pajero along with its petrol engine and the Dakar 2009 entry was actually a Lancer with a diesel engine.

Yes amigo, you are absolutely correct in pointing that out.....the JAPs are getting poorer I guess while the Germans are trying to score some points with the Mitsus off the race!!!
And yes probably they thought it was another WRC and put in Lancers instead of the old trusted winner Pajero!.....bad move!!

Default Dakar and the Robby Gordon Hummer

While VW have dominated the last two dakar seasons, the US NASCAR/BAJA hero Robby Gordon has developed a huge fan following and been in the media spotlight with his H3 based hummer. Gordon finished 3rd overall in 2009 and came in 8th in 2010.

    The Man:
The Desert Racing Thread: Baja, Dakar and KOH - Robby20Gordon

    The Rig:
"Hummer claims the race-truck is based on an H3, but with what appears to be an entirely carbon fiber vehicle, we’re not sure there’s much of the factory car left. It’s a tube-chassis vehicle and while it is built for serious off-roading, Gordon will be comfortable inside thanks to a fully enclosed cockpit with air conditioning. As for the engine, Hummer will only say that it is based on a production GM V8."
The Desert Racing Thread: Baja, Dakar and KOH - IMG 9159

The Hummer is surprisingly jump friendly. Seen here at the 2010 Dakar start ceremony and a 105mph race jump :

Usually rather well behaved, Gordon has been seen bumping slower vehicles (in NASCAR fashion) particularly on long desert stretched where the Hummer has the topspeed advantage:

I am rather perplexed by the use of a 2WD Hummer in a race where all others use 4x4s. It does land him into trouble occasionally (see 3:30 of 2010 stage 12 clip below) but he still manages to get through (as he says in the interview at the end)....with Al-Attiya and Sainz racing each other on their VWs.

Thanks MitsuMan. The jumps are nuts indeed.

Is it just me or is that a supercharger whistle we can hear on the landing!

That Hummer is freakily overpowered and the suspension holds it together amazingly well even with 2WD. Seen here testing for the Baja race. My God indeed:

Boy O Boy.....that guy has balls! Handling that car with power to just two wheels.....that's very effective control, amigo!!! Its basically 4WD that helps you gun it on a bend and on landing back from a jump in particular. It may sound dangerous but believe me....the trick is to floor it when you go airborne so when you land all four wheels dig for grip and you can continue that straight line.....reflexly most would take their foot off the gas and end up losing control!!! And that's the reason you can hear that FORCED induction 'coz he is gunning while hitting the track........ btw, turbos whistle.....superchargers whine!

    Default Dakar 2011

Well guys, Rumour has it that Toyota has shown an interest in entering the 2011 Dakar with a full team. Some speculation on Robby Gordon driving for them but still early times. No news on Mitsubishi coming back. Anything to give the VWs more competition would be welcome! They are looking to make motorsport history with a diesel hattrick.
