Default HELP: Best 4x4 in 2Million budget for family

    Hi guys,

This is my first post in Pakwheels and I found it to be a great resource.

I need some info from the seasoned users here.

    OBJECTIVE:
I am taking a couple of months vacation from work and want to take my family (wife, infant, mother, father, and sister) means total of 5 adults and 1 infant to North areas (I live in Lahore). On the way I might need to pick up a couple more adults, but if I don't have the space I won't.
The factors which are more important to me are as below:

    • I prefer comfort, reliability, resale and luxury more than performance.
    • I intend to sell this car after enjoying 4-6 months, so resale is a major factor.
    • I do not intend to do any major offroading, but you never know!
    • Automatic transmission is a must!
    • I absolutely hate doing any maintenance, so the car should be robust and reliable.

    BUDGET:
Ideally I would like to have the total cost (including buying, fees and small work which you need to do ont he car after buying) to be less than 2 million. However I can go a bit higher if required.

    WORK DONE TILL NOW:

    • Toyota Surf: I had decided to buy Toyota Surf, but after looking at some 96-99 Surf models I found that they are not very luxurious. Infact they look to be a step down from my current Civic in luxury.
    • Toyota Vigo: I found the Vigo to be really luxurious, however the open bed bothers me. My other reservation is that I have heard it doesn't have a heater!
    • Mitsubishi Pajero: Another option is the Mitsubishi Pajero, but I haven't been able to see it in person yet.

For the Vigo, my idea is to get a canopy and seats installed in the bed so it should be able to seat 4 adults in the back, and 5 in the main cabin. I don't know how much the canopy costs, so I would love to hear some ballpark figures.

I would love to hear your comments and valuable feedback in order to help me buy the proper car!

    @qwertypoiu

Vigo 5le manual.....hmmmm...best described as TONGA!!! The real Vigo is the 3 litre intercooled turbo auto and I seriously doubt anyone finding a piece( that's not been run over by an 18 wheeler or thrown off a cliff) for under 2 million pkr!

PRADO 96/97/98 or even 99 will be the right choice from all aspects especially resale; I myself have had VIGO and sold it for being uncomfortable for passengers and i drive a 99 PRADO now.
PAJERO, only if you can find a real neat and less abused otherwise it may hurt your pockets from time to time and resale will be dependent on how enthusiastic a customer is.........

lol @BornToRide: Don't attack him yaar he is just trying to help in his own way.

Guys I have decided a 1999-2003 Pajero 5 door and looking for a good one in Lahore. Wish me luck!

I looked at some Prados, but the ones in my budget are really basic and I don't like the interior.

Personally i would stuck with House of Toyota as you can get some parts and service easily in NOrthern Area of Pakistan but do check the Pajero before leaving for the Northern Area for Heating Issue and 4x4 working and Tow Strap, Battery Couple Wires are must also check some other Gadgets.

    salam......
Though I never owned any 4wd of such kind......yet would share whatever I have concluded after listening to people's experiences........before advising V must keep in mind all the objectives U described .....What I sincerely believe is that U can't keep these objectives altogether......U'll have to compromise somehow.....but overall Toyota Prado/Landcruiser between early and late 90's would b a better choice...there are certain reasons for advising which are...
1...Ur Budget(U should certainly get a good vehicle in 2 Million).
2...Easy to Maintain(Yet u can't say a total "no" to maintenance even to a brand new vehicle)....try to get a recently reconditioned Toyota(quota)...
3... I don't think U would get "Toyota like resale" in any other vehicle's case...moreover it will be easy to sell....
So thats my point of view......moreover I would prefer a Manual transmission over auto as Manual is much better keeping in view the places u most probably visit i.e. northern Pakistan......even manual transmission is better for offroading....
Now the decision is urs..............Allah Hafiz

@thanda: Looks like a nice car but way above my budget. Also, it is manual, which I already mentioned I don't want.

but that was a real adventure, wont do it with my family in it

@thanda: Yeah I know I am very difficult to understand Actually I have a 4x4 and camping bug since my whole life, and I wanna see whether it lives or dies after actually owning a 4x4. That is why I want to have a capable vehicle so that if I get into offroading, then I won't have to change the ride.

@farhan786: Yeah I had found it too. Before you mentioned it, I asked the guy's number on the forum. However keeping in mind the advice from a lot of members and friends, I am not going for 1.8L, as it might be underpowered.

OK guys, I really want to thank you all for your input. I waited and waited to find a good Pajero, but couldn't. So I went for '97 Prado TZ. I will be getting the delivery today and will post pics soon.
