Default Jeepable / off-roading tracks: BABA'S GRADING

Dear Colleagues,
This thread is dedicated to MISKEEN BABA: The Founder of Off-Roading in Abbottabad Region. Therefore, may I request all our colleagues to refer to this classification as BABA's GRADES?
This thread is intended to collect, organize and dissipate information about jeepable tracks in Pakistan. Currently, many of us gather information through personal contacts, and usually, the information is sketchy and incomplete. Earlier, we discussed and some recommendations were finalized and agreed upon.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" />
It was recommended to grade the tracks, so that the information may be streamlined. Instead of personal differences clouding decisions about difficulties, it would be more appropriate to objectively grade the tracks. Please follow the following recommended grading spectrum (All our friends are requested to help us edit and improve these)

(Grade 0:- very easy, softish dirt track / green lane, negotiable with any reasonable 2-wheel drive car)
(Grade 1:- Soft, dirt track, with some rocks. Requires better ground clearance. Therefore, negotiable with any 4 WD Vehicle, and a driver of any competency)
(Grade 2:- Track with stones and incline, narrow and difficult to negotiate in places, requires fully functional production 4WD vehicle with a good driver, Trolley can be towed if vehicle is powerful and heavy)
(Grade 3:- All of the above, with some places requiring expert spotters and out-of-vehicle assistance to guide and support the driver. Needs Expert Off-Road Drivers and a fully maintained vehicle. Towing Trolley possible but dangerous on these tracks)
(Grade 4:- Extreme Off-Road tracks, requiring all of the above, and support equipment, including but not limited to a strong winch, ropes, chains, bush winches, and other pulling or restraining material. Essential to have two or more vehicles:Not to be tackled by a single vehicle under any circumstances. ABSOLUTELY NO TROLLEYS)
(Grade 5:- Only for modified vehicles and Professional Off-Road Drivers. Requiring Expert Team Assistance, eg for construction of temporary supports and bridges)

It is requested to please post all your track information in the following format.

Name of the Destination
Distance from a point of common knowledge / Length of the track
Distance in travel hours on an average speed
Track Grade
Last Fuel Availability Point
Last Food Availability Point
Last Roofed Accommodation Point
(If possible, please post data regarding the accommodation, like cost, friendliness of staff, whether feasible for family or not, etc……..)
Last Vehicle Repair / Spares/Oils etc. availability
Security Concerns
Kids Interests
Activities Possible at Destination
Destination Grading / Scenery
Please substantiate with some pictures:
(Please recommend Changes and Improvements)

Default Balakot to Babusar Track

Balakot to Babusar Track
The road leading from Balakot to Naran is now no longer gradable as track. From Naran to Jalkhad, the road is partly metalled, and some part is broken down road. However, from Jalkhad to Babusar is a good track. In two years time, it appears, this will also be converted to tarmac: creating a lot of ease and all-weather access, but destroying the beauty. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" />
HERE IS AN INTRODUCTION OF THE TRACK FROM BALAKOT TO BABUSAR TOP

Name of the Destination: BABUSAR TOP
Distance from a point of common knowledge / Length of the track
FROM BALAKOT, it is around 150 km, and in good weather, it shall take around 6-8 hours
Advisable to start early from Balakot, especially if coming from Islamabad
Distance in travel hours on an average speed
Around 6 - 8 hours
Track Grade Grade 0, going upto Grade 1 in wet weather
Immediately when the road opens in spring, may go up to Grade 3 due to glacier crossings
Very convenient for trolley or trailer towing, and establishing camps

Last Fuel Availability Point
Presently NARAN
Battakundi is another small establishment where fuel may be available, albeit at a higher price, and stored in containers, so not very clean.
Beyond Battakundi, the fuel availability is low. If someone is intending to track the plains, GittiDass, and beyond, it is advisable to keep a supply of Fuel on board.
Last Food Availability Point
For purchasing food items and cooking stuff, it is NARAN. Ready food is available up to Baissel. Beyond Baissel, no food is available. One may be able to buy some goat or other animal on the way, and recently, some honey, but other than that, almost nothing. Even fuel wood is scarce up in the mountains (above tree line). So, it is advisable to carry a supply of fuel for cooking also.

Last Roofed Accommodation Point
NARAN for families
Jalkhad or Baissel for groups of off-roaders or adventurers. Even beyond Baissel, some ‘Chappar’ type hotel may be found. These are owned and run by locals, and the staff is very friendly, in their own way. May appear rude on initial contact, which is not a fact.
Recently some tents have cropped up along Lulusar lake, and other visitors’ interests, and these may be rented reasonably cheaply, but still, toilet facilities, and other amenities are unsatisfactory. Not recommended for families
Security Concerns
NONE whatsoever.
No animal dangers. No two-legged animals abound. The locals are very co-operative and very decent people. Beautiful and loving people as a matter of fact. Without any reference, however, it is recommended to be always polite to any person in any locality. Walking in the night alone or in group is not dangerous at all. A stick in hand is good for any stray animals or for feeling for the track though.
Kids Interests
Rafting has recently been started in Naran. Some other activities are conducted by the Adventure Foundation: Highly recommended for kids of all ages. Very safe, and run by expert instructors.
Activities Possible at Destination
Walking, Photography, Cycling, Camping, Birds Watching; Practically anything to do with Nature
Destination Grading / Scenery
Very scenic. I would recommend to all off roaders to visit at least once in life time. Visitors from abroad are welcome and will be very comfortable and will enjoy the beauty.
Please substantiate with some pictures:
Below are a limited number of pictures from the track. Others may be found at ‘off-roaders unlimited’, in forums ‘Off-Roaders Unlimited (OFF-ROADERS / SUVs) on the same website.
Contact Chairman, Off-Roaders Unlimited, for any questions or guidance, through the forum or through email message.

Dr sb, an interesting and new idea indeed. This was required. Please also let us know as in which areas do we have to focus? Like can it be within punjab or only in northern areas?

Noman Saheb, please do mention if in your hunting encounters you come across some tracks, worthy of others' visit as sight-seeing or off-roading things.

Default Nathiagali baragali in winter

NATHIAGALI BARAGALI IN WINTER
The road leading from Abbottabad to Nathiagali is well known in tourist circles. In the Off-Roaders forums though, this is discussed only in the snow season. The snow cross has high-lighted this area for winter tourism, and this year, things were better.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" />
A less well-known track connects two points on the main road through a semi-circle dirt track. This track is snow-covered in winter. Beautiful, yet dangerous to drive through.

Name of the Destination: BaraGali Track
Distance from a point of common knowledge / Length of the track
From Abbottabad, Baragali is around 20 km, and the track itself is around 4 km in length.
Distance in travel hours on an average speed
1 hour from Abbottabad
Half an hour to cross the track in summer
In winter, only God knows how much time is needed to cross the track
Track Grade Grade 0, going upto Grade 1 in rains. Some areas may be grade 2 in rainy season.
This year we were unable to cross it in snow in an i.o. with snow chains on. So, we think it is grade 4 or may be even grade 5 in winter.
Very convenient for trolley or trailer towing, and establishing camps

Last Fuel Availability Point
Easily available. Not a concern.
Last Food Availability Point
Not a concern. Easily available nearby. Good for self-cooking though.

Last Roofed Accommodation Point
Not a Concern. Easily available in Abbottabad and NathiaGali.
Security Concerns
NO Real Danger.
Minimal animal dangers. The area is near the real crossings of some local big cats. A stick in hand is good for any stray animals or for feeling for the track though. Better to walk in twos during late hours.
Kids Interests
Only a serene walk. No special interest points for kids.
Activities Possible at Destination
Walking, Photography, Cycling, Camping, Birds Watching; Practically anything to do with Nature
Destination Grading / Scenery
Reasonably beautiful spot.

doc sb, very useful information. this should be a highly visited and updated thread as who ever covers a good track should list it here in this format with pics if possible.
this could become a track guide for others.
great effort.

JezakAllah, all friends.
I agree that the idea is to post information on this thread, so any one could collect it and use it. If there is anything incorrect, we can always update it.
Please feel at home and post your experiences
The format also can be improved to accommodate other ideas or gradings can be altered, etc., etc.
Anyway, thanks to all who have contributed, and whose support, of course, is important.

Default Dadar, Sachan-Jabouri

Dadar, Sachan-Jabouri
From Abbottabad, Dadar and Sachan-Jabouri is a convenient, comfortable Day-Trip. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

Name of the Destination: Dadar, Sachan-Jabouri

Distance from a point of common knowledge / Length of the track
From Abbottabad, a black-top road leads to Shinkiari, beyond which, there is a turning towards the right. This turning is around 46 km from Abbottabad, and takes around 1 hour due to heavy traffic between Abbottabad and Manshera.
Turning onto the side road relieves one from heavy traffic, but the road is still metaled. Around 12 km later, the road becomes a wreck, and another 4 km on all marks of a black top road vanish.
30 km of dirt track takes you beyond Sachan-Jabouri to beautiful picturesque areas.
Distance in travel hours on an average speed
2 hours from Abbottabad

Track Grade
Grade 0, going up to Grade 1 during rain.
Some areas may be grade 2 in rainy season.
As soon as you turn away from the main track, you are able to find many grade 2, 3 and even grade 4 tracks for fun. We were able to locate this track, leading up to the river, and were able to crawl along. The Austin Gypsy, in spite of its significant traction, and sporting front and rear differentials, was unable to tackle some areas, and required winching.
Night conveniently upgrades many tracks, as in this case. A simple grade 1 track was converted to grade 3, with expert spotters required across the terrain.

Last Fuel Availability Point
Easily available. Not a concern.

Last Food Availability Point
Not a concern. Easily available nearby. Good for self-cooking though.

Last Roofed Accommodation Point
No roofed accommodation. Have to return to Manshera or Abbottabad

Security Concerns
NO Real Danger.

Kids Interests
A small man-made lake with fishing facilities on the way, is a good spot for kids, and enjoyable sit in for a relaxed meal.

Activities Possible at Destination
Walking, Photography, some primitive boating and fishing at the lake
Destination Grading / Scenery
Reasonably beautiful spot.

Please substantiate with some pictures:

Abbottabad to Kamal Bun
The road leading from Abbottabad to Khannian is absolutely world class, fully metalled, and reasonable wide.
