Default Need some advice for my new rig

    Hey guys,

Its great to see so many 4*4 enthusiasts over here. I'm happy to say that I too am now a part of the club. I bit the bullet a week or so ago, and am now the proud owner of a 1978 Jeep CJ5. As expected though, I've run into a few problems .

There is excessive play in the steering wheel and a lot of vibration entering the cabin. I suspected some problems with the engine mounts and ball bearings or U joints. I took it to my mechanic, and he tells me that the engine mounts, several ball bearings, and the steering box need to be either replaced or repaired. He also slapped me with a mongoloid bill :p. I understand that the parts can be sourced from Bilal Gunj, but how much should these repairs (including parts) cost?

There's also a grinding and whining sound when the car decelerates a bit in third or fourth. I'm assuming this is coming from the drive shaft? Any ideas or suggestions (or cost estimates :p) would be great.

I really jumped in with the sharks with this purchase, and I hope ya'll would help me make the most of my newfound hobby .

    Hello and welcome!
Just my 2 cents, don't have to be correct. Rule of thumb when you purchase a used 4x4, best to steadily invest in the following:

1- Change all the bushings (front and rear)
2- Check for play at the steering arms, ball joints, noise from the wheel bearings, get all the nipples greased heavily, change all the arms that require changing them (steering arm etc). I doubt your steering box will need to be changed, but its vital you do these things first and only then jump to other conclusions.
3- As for the sound, could be the drive shaft, the wheel bearings, or the gear itself.
4- Change all the lubes you can, engine oil, brake oil, diff oil, gear oil, 4x4 oil, clutch oil.
5- Change the clutch kit and accelerator cable.
6- Understand now that your life is screwed, and nothing will be cheap, live with it

Some times, you'll just have to go through the pain of the process of elimination. Best of luck!

PS. Do not use non-genuine parts, you'll only be in more trouble later on, TRUST ME!

    Hey Rao,

Thanks for that dude. I'll definitely get these things checked out. So it seems that the repairs that I had in mind about the bearings n' all are quite essential...I'll get on with it then

Just to clarify, by clutch kit, are you referring to the clutch plate and pressure plate?

I know this is a tough (and expensive) hobby, so I've already prepared myself for small problems here and there. Hey, if it runs, its fine

I got some Yokohama Geolander M/T+ on it and wanted to install some spacers on it as well; the tires bite into the sidewall on a hard turn, and it'll be a mother to get a new pair if these are effed up

Hope to post some pics real soon.

Thumbs up @LakersFan - Welcome to the Club!

Welcome to the club. tyres, looks etc. are the last things to be addressed, focus on reliability, your 4x4 should be the ride which you can take anywhere, anytime without any fear of breaking down. Best of luck and keep on posting your queries and experiences - Sharing is caring

No, the kit does not consist of the plates you have stated, its a simple spring mechanism in most cars that accentuates the feel of the clutch. Unfortunately, if you gun your ride during off road scenarios, this kit can give way causing your clutch to be stuck to the floor, read, $hit!!. Total cost of the replacement will probably be just a few hundred rupees, but its an excellent investment. Buy an extra one and keep it in your ride.

You don't want to install spacers, unless you want to be a ricer. Spacers totally muck with the articulation on a 4x4, plus, they are not reliable. Raise your ride, either google body lifting or its fairly easy to do on a leaf sprung set up. Any kamaani waala will be able to do it for you. Bear in mind, that raising your ride through the leafs will cause your overall ride quality to deteriorate. Or, if you have the nuts to do it, carve off bits off your fenders.

    My 2 cents.

    Hey there LakersFan,
I feel that you should start off by taking your car to an experienced Jeep mechanic and get a thorough check up done. Its quite impractical to say anything much about the state of affairs and how you should be proceeding unless one knows exactly what modification have been done, what is the state of the varios parts and overall structural integrity of the 30+ year old rig that we are talking about.

Best of luck and welcome to the club!
    Regards,
    SK

PS: You may have bought the Jeep, but trust me you don't own it as yet, it owns you for now

    Haha, nicely put Suhaib

Do you know of any experienced Jeep mechanics in Lahore? I've heard of a Sain Sb. located in R.A. bazaar. Apparently, he handles all the military vehicles and Jeeps in the area. What do you think?

I have seen quite a few Jeeps, VW bugs, Microbuses, Fords, Chevy's and a few mini's as well there. Must be able to handle your's too.

Sorry missed the earlier post! I am not really aware of an experienced core Jeep mechanis as such in Lahore! Do try these guys you have mentioned and let us know how things go.

The issue with buying old jeeps is that most of the time a number of things need replacing and its not really evident as to what will match up best with which part unless you have a bunch like the Rawalpindi chaps who have tried and tested almost every available combo of jeepable parts....

    Best Of Luck!

Congrats dear ..... welcome to the club..... I also switched to 4x4 couple of months ago. Though I got myself a jero 2.5 turbo diesel and I must say it was in real good condition. This is what I did .....

Received and checked all lubricants, and then took it to Naraan .... till jheel Saif-ul-Malook and on the way back up to shogran ..... all went good except the hose pipe (heater pipe in/out) got burst as it was weak. It wasnt too much of a headache apart from filling up radiator every now and then for couple of hours and later my cousin came up with the idea of bypassing the heater hose, i.e connected one hose (which was good) to circulate water, it worked well and we reached balakot. So cutting the story short, by all this, I tested my jero and I was happy with the performance.
After the trip, I changed all lubricants, all filters, clutch plate and pressure plate as well (cuz I cud smell the clutch leather especially on the way to jheel) ...... It cost a handsome amount of money to get all GENUINE parts and installation BUT ..... I am much much relaxed now and proud to be an owner of my sparky jero.

Conclusion: You have to lighten your wallet for the first time and in return you will get peace of mind, and always go for genuine spare parts, they are costly but lasts longer.
