Thumbs down Defender VS Land Cruiser

    Hello jeep lovers,

I am confused which one to select. Brand new Land Rover Defender or 2000 Land Cruiser. Both r 5 door and almost same price range around 38 lac for Defender and 35 for LC. Purpose is to get a hard core / family jeep , good for adventurous trips of hard northern areas and some off roading events of jeep clubs. Although LC is much more luxurious, comfortable , classy and powerful than Defender but it would be 10-12 years old , so is it still comparable with a brand new Defender which comes with an year warranty. An old car frequently visits workshops and parts r hell expensive and also it consumes lot of time.
    Pl advice what to buy

Have owned both. LC all the way. You will get where ever you want to go, and come back in comfort. LC LC LC ! having said that, i love the Defender for its iconic shape and all the fun things you can do with it, in terms of suspension and up grades.

And don't forget any machine is only as capable as the man driving it!

I agree there is always a driver to make things go or stuck....

Test Drive? You will be hooked to LC then if you are inclined towards Defender then only test drive in extreme off road conditions.
To all the extreme drivers, please come offroad like ME to keep others safe on the roads.

Being hooked to LC I meant LC 100 and not LC 70.

I'm not saying don't buy a Defender... buy one but then don't expect it to be comfortable and don't expect the parts to be available other than from probably 10 shops in the whole country and be prepared to pay a handsome amount of money for them!

Xulfiqar and I know each other.. and I agree on everything he has said. I bought mine brand new in 2002 and I still have it; I spend a lot of money on it from time to time and I mostly service it myself as I am an advanced DIYer. You will only like a Defender if you are a propa motorhead!

let me sum it up for you. If your wife likes nice plush sofas as car seats and nice amenities like a rounded dashboard looking dashboard then if you end up buying an LR defender you better be very good in sleeping on the sofa or even outside.

It has its purpose - to be driven where nothing has tread before just like the Gwagen - (problem with Gwagen is that your banker does not like it). The LC has its own charm - its civilised enough for you to pull up at the entrance of a grand ball in it - pull up in a defender you best be wearing camo. Get the idea.

Buy a Landy and in three years you will be lucky to get 2-2.5million back!

No matter how you try to spin the final decision, in the end, all the facts and input from everyone here is in front of you. The LC is a more 'all-rounder' machine (family friendly + offroad friendly) than the LRD.
The 2 machines are from totally different worlds and should not (not can not) be compared.
If I were in your shoes, I would go for LC hands down. Our last event in Rawat was a shocker for me as almost all the LRD's did not perform as well as I had expected when it came to climbing slopes etc. so much for the endless torx. Whereas the TLCs and Jeeps conquered pretty much everything.
Then again, I have also seen and sat in Ali's LRD in Kalaam, and it was the best performer out of all the vehicles there....so to sum this all up, I would say the machine we choose has EVERYTHING to do with the kind of drivers we are.
Some might agree that 'the machine chooses you, and not the other way around'

Oh Hyzin what old discussions u guys hav dig out. Ya six months back I was planning for a new defender or either LC100 for both extreme off roading and family adventures but then come to the conclusion that for extreme off road adventures , a separate HARD ROCK type jeep should b bought so ended up with Nomi's wrangler which proved herself in several occasions. Now after using my Prado for an year I want to upgrade to LC100 and searching now a days. The purpose of LC would b everyday family use and North adventures.
